Abstract

An antenna may include an electromagnetic band gap (EBG) ground plane, and a plurality of unit cells that are periodically spaced and inclusive of respective dipole antennas, and positioned over the EBG ground plane.

Claims

1. An antenna comprising:

an electromagnetic band gap (EBG) ground plane; and

a plurality of unit cells that are periodically spaced and inclusive of respective dipole antennas, and the plurality of unit cells are positioned over the EBG ground plane.

2. The antenna according to claim 1, wherein the dipole antennas each include a via that extends to the ground plane.

3. The antenna according to claim 1, wherein the EBG ground plane is comprises an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC).

4. The antenna according to claim 1, wherein the EBG ground plane includes FR4 material.

5. The antenna according to claim 1, wherein the dipole antennas are positioned a quarter wavelength over the EBG ground plane.

6. The antenna according to claim 1, wherein the dipole antennas are dual-polarized dipole antennas.

7. The antenna according to claim 1, wherein the dipole antennas are dipole slot antennas.

8. The antenna according to claim 1, wherein the dipole antennas are configured to receive a wireless signal greater than 1 GHz.

9. The antenna according to claim 1, wherein the plurality of dipole antennas are embedded within a ceramic.

10. The antenna according to claim 9, wherein the ceramic is silica.

11. A method of manufacturing an antenna, comprising:

forming an electromagnetic band gap (EBG) ground plane; and

forming a plurality of unit cells that are periodically spaced and inclusive of respective dipole antennas, and positioned over the EBG ground plane.

12. The method according to claim 11, further comprising extending a via from the dipole antenna to the ground plane.

13. The method according to claim 11, wherein forming the EBG ground plane includes forming the EBG ground plane with an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC).

14. The method according to claim 11, wherein forming the EBG ground plane includes forming the EBG ground plane using FR4 material.

15. The method according to claim 11, further comprising positioning the dipole antennas a quarter wavelength over the EBG ground plane.

16. The method according to claim 11, wherein forming the dipole antennas includes forming dual-polarized dipole antennas.

17. The method according to claim 11, wherein forming the dipole antennas includes forming dipole slot antennas.

18. The method according to claim 11, wherein forming the dipole antennas includes forming the dipole antennas configured to receive a wireless signal greater than 1 GHz.

19. The method according to claim 11, wherein forming the plurality of unit cells include forming dipole antennas embedded within a ceramic.

20. The method according to claim 19, wherein forming the dipole antennas within a ceramic include forming the dipole antennas within a ceramic composed of silica.
