Abstract

Disclosed generally is a face plate for a vise that is capable of gripping multiple work-pieces of different sizes at the same time. In one embodiment, the disclosed subject matter may be a vise face plate comprising: a base with an upper compensation structure and a lower compensation structure; and, wherein the upper and lower compensation structures define two sets of working surfaces. In use, the plate may be secured to a movable jaw so that the working surfaces may be employed to clamp a plurality of work pieces between the working surfaces and a fixed jaw.

Claims

1. A compensating face plate assembly for a vise operationally configured to grip multiple work pieces at the same time.

2. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 1, wherein the compensating face plate is further defined by a base with at least one aperture, and at least one compensating structure secured to the base, wherein the compensating structure defines a plurality of working surfaces.

3. The compensating face plate assembly of 2, wherein the base is removably secured to a movable vise jaw.

4. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 3, wherein the compensating structures are further defined by an upper and lower compensating structure, wherein the aperture is accessible between the upper and lower compensating structures, whereby a user can access the aperture and remove, secure, and/or interchange the compensating face plate from one vise to another vise.

5. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 4, wherein the upper compensating structure is defined by a first stage of compensating elements and a second stage of compensating elements movably mounted to a carrier plate, wherein the carrier plate is movably fastened to the base.

6. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 5, wherein the lower compensating structure is defined by a first stage of compensating elements and a second stage of compensating elements movably mounted to a carrier plate, wherein the carrier plate is movably fastened to the base.

The compensating face plate assembly of claim 6, wherein the first stage of compensating elements are pivotally mounted to the carrier plate with a fastener that is smaller in diameter than at least one bore that is disposed along the carrier plate, whereby the first and second compensating elements are able to shift and pivot to accommodate slight variations in size and shape of work pieces and allow for uniform and equal force to be exerted on the work pieces.

8. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 7, wherein the first stage of compensating elements is comprised of at least two compensating elements.

9. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 7, wherein the second stage of compensating elements is comprised of at least four compensating elements.

10. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 7, wherein the compensating elements are further defined by nubs that are substantially medially posited on the rear of the compensating elements.

11. A method of machining comprising:

obtaining a compensating face plate assembly comprising a base with at least one aperture, an upper and lower compensating structure fastened to the base, wherein the upper and lower compensating structures are further defined by carrier plates, wherein at least one compensating element is pivotally mounted to the carrier plates, wherein the compensating element is further defined by a nub that is substantially medially posited on the rear of the compensating element, wherein the aperture is accessible between the compensating structures, whereby a user can access the apertures to interchange the compensating face plate;

securing the compensating face plate to a movable vise jaw;

placing at least one work piece between the compensating face plate and a standard face plate;

moving the vise jaw, whereby compensating elements are exerting a uniform and equal force on the work piece and holding the work piece in place; and

,

machining the work piece.

12. A compensating face plate assembly comprising:

a base with at least one aperture;

an upper compensation structure defined by a carrier plate and at least one set of compensation elements, wherein the carrier plate is secured to the base;

a lower compensation structure defined by a carrier plate and at least one stage of compensating elements, wherein the carrier plate is secured to the base.

13. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 12, wherein the stages of compensating elements are pivotally mounted between the upper plate and the lower plate.

14. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 12, wherein the compensating elements are further defined by a nub substantially medially posited on the rear of the compensating element.

15. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 14, wherein the stages of compensating elements are further defined by a first stage and a second stage.

16. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 15, wherein the first stage of compensating elements is defined by two elements.

17. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 15, wherein the second stage of compensating elements is defined by four elements.

18. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 15, wherein the first stage and second stage of compensating elements are aligned with one another, whereby the nub of a first stage compensating element is in contact with the second stage compensating element.

19. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 12, wherein the aperture is operationally configured to attach to a vise jaw.

20. The compensating face plate assembly of claim 12, wherein the compensating elements are pivotally mounted to the carrier plate via fasteners that are smaller in diameter than at least one bore that is disposed along the compensating element.
