Abstract

In some examples, a wireless device communicates in a communications session over a cellular network with a remote endpoint device. The wireless device detects a condition indicating potential loss of wireless connectivity or actual loss of wireless connectivity with the cellular network. In response to the detecting, communication with the remote endpoint device is transferred to a communication path including a service that supports asynchronous communications.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

communicating, by a wireless device, in a communications session over a cellular network with a remote endpoint device;

detecting, by the wireless device, a condition indicating potential loss of wireless connectivity or actual loss of wireless connectivity with the cellular network; and

in response to the detecting, transferring communication with the remote endpoint device to a communication path including a service that supports asynchronous communications.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the communications session is a full-duplex communications session.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the transferring comprises initiating a second communications session with the service.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

detecting resumption of wireless connectivity with the cellular network; and

in response to detecting the resumption of the wireless connectivity with the cellular network, terminating the second communications session.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the initiating is performed by the wireless device.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein the initiating is performed by a cellular network node.

7. The method of claim 2, wherein the transferring establishes a half-duplex communications session between the wireless device and the service.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the transferring further causes establishment of another half-duplex communications session between the service and the remote endpoint device.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the detecting is based on:

a signal strength measured by the wireless device, or

presence of a radio link failure.

10. A user equipment (UE) comprising:

a wireless interface to communicate wirelessly with a cellular network in a first communications session in which data is exchanged between the UE and a remote endpoint device; and

at least one processor configured to;

detect a condition indicating potential loss of wireless connectivity or actual loss of wireless connectivity with the cellular network; and

in response to the detecting, initiate a second communications session with a service that supports asynchronous communications to provide communication between the UE and the remote endpoint device.

11. The UE of claim 10, wherein the initiating comprises sending a request to initiate the second communications session to the service.

12. The UE of claim 11, wherein the request is to initiate a voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VOIP) communications session.

13. The UE of claim 12, wherein the VOIP communications session is a half-duplex communications session between the UE and the service.

14. The UE of claim 10, wherein the second communications session is a half-duplex communications session between the UE and the service, and the initiating further causes another half-duplex communications session between the remote endpoint device and the service.

15. The UE of claim 14, wherein the first communications session is a full-duplex communications session.

16. The UE of claim 10, wherein the at least one processor is to perform the detecting based on a measuring a downlink signal from the cellular network.

17. The UE of claim 10, wherein the data exchanged in the first communications session comprises voice data.

18. An article comprising at least one non-transitory storage medium storing instructions that upon execution cause a wireless device to:

communicate in a first communications session over a cellular network with a remote endpoint device;

detect a condition indicating potential loss of wireless connectivity or actual loss of wireless connectivity with the cellular network; and

in response to the detecting, transfer communication with the remote endpoint device to a communication path including a service that supports asynchronous communications in which half-duplex communications is used between the service and the wireless device to allow sending of data to the remote endpoint device.

19. The article of claim 18, wherein the transferring comprises sending a request to the service to initiate a half-duplex communications session between the wireless device and the service.

20. The article of claim 19, wherein the transferring further causes another half-duplex communications session between the service and the remote endpoint device.
