Abstract

An example of a resuscitation system is that includes at least two defibrillation electrodes configured to be applied to the exterior of the chest of a patient for delivering a defibrillation shock, a source of one or more ECG signals from the patient, a defibrillation circuit for delivering a defibrillation shock to the defibrillation electrodes, a control box that receives and processes the ECG signals to determine whether a defibrillation shock should be delivered or whether CPR should be performed, and that issues instructions to the user either to deliver a defibrillation shock or to perform CPR, wherein the determination of whether CPR should be performed and the instructions to perform CPR can occur at substantially any point during a rescue.

Claims

1. An apparatus for use by a rescuer to resuscitate a patient, comprising:

a housing;

one or more visual indicators disposed on the housing;

a compression sensor disposed in the housing and configured to generate one or more signals indicative of one or more chest compression parameters; and

one or more buttons disposed on the housing, wherein at least one button of the one or more buttons is configured to activate at least one of the one or more visual indicators upon actuation of the at least one button, wherein the one or more visual indicators correspond to resuscitation information comprising the one or more chest compression parameters.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the one or more chest compression parameters comprise one or more of a chest compression depth, a chest compression rate, and a chest compression timing.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the one or more buttons are associated with at least one of chest compression monitoring and ventilation.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the housing comprises a graphic indication of a placement position for the housing on the chest of the patient.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the graphic indication of the placement position comprises an indication of the placement position relative to the collarbones of the patient.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the housing comprises an indication of a location for the hands of the rescuer during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the resuscitation information comprises one or more of a count corresponding to chest compressions and a count corresponding to breathing.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the compression sensor comprises an accelerometer.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the compression sensor comprises a force sensor.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the resuscitation information comprises ventilation information.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the one or more buttons comprise a button configured to pause resuscitation prompting.
