Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention utilize mobile devices to provide information on a user'"'"'s behaviors during transportation. For example, a mobile device carried by a user can be used to detect and analyze driving behavior. The mobile device can further be used to provide alerts based on driving behavior and to encourage and track modification of driving behavior.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving motion data from the mobile device;

identifying a user of a mobile device as a driver of a vehicle;

correlating movement of the mobile device to a trip in the vehicle;

monitoring at least one behavior of the mobile device in the vehicle;

correlating the at least one behavior to at least one driving event; and

notifying the user of the at least one driving event using the mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

continuing to monitor the at least one behavior of the mobile device in the vehicle after notifying the user of the at least one driving event; and

determining whether the at least one behavior of the mobile device changed after notifying the user of the at least one driving event.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising assigning a score to the trip based on the at least one driving event.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the user is notified by at least one of an audio alert, a push notification, a haptic alert, or in-application feedback.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the user is notified of the at least one driving event during the trip in the vehicle.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one behavior comprises at least one of a motion behavior or a state of use behavior.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the motion behavior comprises at least one of speed, acceleration, location, or orientation.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the state of use behavior comprises at least one of type of use, time of use, or whether the mobile device is being actively used during the trip in the vehicle.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one driving event comprises at least one of a braking event, a speeding event, a distracted driving event, a non-braking event, a non-speeding event, or a non-distracted driving event.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein identifying the user of the mobile device as the driver of the vehicle comprises utilizing the motion data.

11. A mobile device comprising:

a memory;

a motion data unit; and

a processor coupled to the memory, wherein the processor is configured to perform operations including;

receiving motion data from the motion data unit;

identifying a user of the mobile device as a driver of a vehicle;

correlating movement of the mobile device to a trip in the vehicle;

monitoring at least one behavior of the mobile device in the vehicle;

correlating the at least one behavior to at least one driving event; and

notifying the user of the at least one driving event.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein the operations further include:

continuing to monitor the at least one behavior of the mobile device in the vehicle after notifying the user of the at least one driving event; and

determining whether the at least one behavior of the mobile device changed after notifying the user of the at least one driving event.

13. The device of claim 11, wherein the operations further include assigning a score to the trip based on the at least one driving event.

14. The device of claim 11, wherein the user is notified by at least one of an audio alert, a push notification, a haptic alert, or in-application feedback.

15. The device of claim 11, wherein the user is notified of the at least one driving event during the trip in the vehicle.

16. The device of claim 11, wherein the at least one behavior comprises at least one of a motion behavior or a state of use behavior.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein the motion behavior comprises at least one of speed, acceleration, location, or orientation.

18. The device of claim 16, wherein the state of use behavior comprises at least one of type of use, time of use, or whether the device is being actively used during the trip in the vehicle.

19. The device of claim 11, wherein the at least one driving event comprises at least one of a braking event, a speeding event, a distracted driving event, a non-braking event, a non-speeding event, or a non-distracted driving event.

20. The mobile device of claim 11, wherein identifying the user of the mobile device as the driver of the vehicle comprises utilizing the motion data.
