Abstract

Disclosed embodiments may include a device, system and method for providing a low cost device that can measure refractive errors very accurately via attachment to a smart phone. A disclosed device may use ambient light or a light source in simulating the cross cylinder procedure that optometrists use by utilizing the inverse Shack-Hartman technique. The optical device may include an array of lenslets and pinholes that will force the user to effectively focus at different depths. Using an optical device, in conjunction with a smart phone, the user first changes the angle of the axis until he/she sees a cross pattern (the vertical and horizontal lines are equally spaced). The user adjusts the display, typically using the controls on the smartphone, to make the lines come together and overlap, which corresponds to bringing the view into sharp focus, thus determining the appropriate optical prescription for the user.

Claims

1. A method to measure refraction errors, including diopter correction and astigmatism in a user, using an optical device and a smartphone, the method comprising the steps of:

a. attaching the optical device to a screen of the smart phone using microsuction tape and an elastic band, wherein the optical device comprises a view screen;

b. using the view screen to depict two lines the two lines having a beginning angle including a first and second (vertical and horizontal) indicium;

c. directing the view screen of the optical device towards the user;

d. changing the angle of the axis of the indicia until the user sees two crosses displaced by the same distance, wherein the first and second indicia are equally spaced;

e. moving the first and second indicia into alignment, using the optical device attached to the smart phone;

f. rotating the pattern on the display by 45 degrees such that the first indicia is parallel to the axis of astigmatism, and the second indicia is perpendicular to the axis of astigmatism; and

g. adjusting the lines depicted upon the view screen such that the first and second indicia are overlapping.

2. The method of measuring refraction errors in claim 1, wherein the first and second indicia are respectively, vertical and horizontal colored lines.

3. The method of measuring refraction errors in claim 2, wherein the colored lines are red and green.

4. The method of measuring refraction errors in claim 1, further comprising a validation step that tests results by displaying to the user a predefined cross optical pattern.

5. A system to measure refraction errors, including diopter correction and astigmatism in a user, comprising a smartphone that comprises a light source, and an optical device, the system comprising:

a. a single concave lens for demagnification;

b. a four lens array; and

c. a magnification stage comprising a convex lens and a concave lens.

6. The system to measure refraction errors of claim 5, further comprising an additional lens that produces a pattern that passes through the four lens array.

7. The system of claim 5 further including a magnification stage that intentionally induces coma in order to make the lines more visible and at the same time increases the ease of a user to perceive the overlapping of the lines;

8. The system of claim 7 wherein the optical device includes demagnification stage comprising a single concave lens to increase effective resolution.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein the demagnification stage is used to reduce the size of the device keeping the same resolution of the device in diopters.

10. The system of claim 8 wherein the demagnification stage is used to increase the resolution of the device in diopters with the same size.

11. The demagnification stage of claim 8 used to reduce the size of the device and increase the resolution of the device in diopters

12. The system to measure refraction errors of claim 5, wherein each lens in the four lens array is approximately 2 mm thick and 6 mm apart (measured center from center).

13. An optical device suitable for attachment to a smartphone, the optical device comprising:

a. a single concave lens for demagnification;

b. a four lens array; and

c. a convex lens for magnification.

14. The system of claim 13, further comprising an additional lens that produces a pattern that passes through the four-lens array.

15. An optical device suitable for attachment to a smartphone, the optical device comprising:

a. a single concave lens for demagnification;

b. two lenses; and

c. one slit defined within each of the two lenses.

16. The device of claim 15 wherein the two lenses are colored to act as bandpass filters.

17. The device of claim 16 wherein one lens are colored green and one lens is colored red.

18. The device of claim 15 wherein the lenses are mounted on upon a rotating mount.
