Abstract

A portal apparatus for securely controlling passage is described. The apparatus uses a passageway which includes at least two moveable door panels that operate in conjunction with at least two sidewalls including at least one linear sidewall. The apparatus includes position sensors for tracking a position of a subject passing through the passageway and determining a rate of movement of the subject. While the subject is walking through the passageway, each door panels is controlled to move at the determined rate of movement of the subject.

Claims

1. A portal apparatus for securely controlling passage, said apparatus comprising:

a passageway including at least two moveable door panels operating in conjunction with at least two sidewalls including at least one linear sidewall;

wherein the portal apparatus includes position sensors for tracking a position of a subject passing through the passageway and determining a rate of movement of the subject;

wherein while the subject is walking through the passageway, at least one of said door panels is controlled, responsive to the determined rate of subject movement, to move with the subject and at same rate as the subject.

2. The portal apparatus of claim 1 wherein the position sensors that determine the position of the subject enable the at least two door panels to be controlled such that all of the at least two door panels are prevented from touching the subject.

3. The portal apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of said at least two door panels is also rotatable.

4. The portal apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of said at least two door panels is individually controlled.

5. The portal apparatus of claim 1 wherein for at least a first portion of time that the door panel is within the passageway, the at least one door panel moves in a direction parallel to the linear sidewall.

6. The portal apparatus of claim 5 wherein for at least a second portion of time that the at least one door panel is within the passageway, the at least one door panel is oriented perpendicular to the linear sidewall.

7. The portal apparatus of claim 1 further comprising using crowd-related information to control directionality of the portal apparatus in such a way as to match directional throughput capability of the portal apparatus with requirements determined from the crowd-related information.

8. The portal apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of said at least two door panels includes at least one video camera.

9. The portal apparatus of claim 8 wherein the at least one video camera is capable of facing the subject walking through the passageway;

and

wherein the at least one video camera captures images of the subject passing through the passageway.

10. The portal apparatus of claim 8 wherein each of said at least two door panels comprises a video camera mounted on each side of the door panel and facing in opposite directions.

11. The portal apparatus of claim 9 wherein the captured images are analyzed to determine if the subject'"'"'s facial expressions are consistent with someone about to commit a violent act;

and

wherein if from the analyzed images it is determined that the subject is likely to commit a violent act, the door panel facing the subject is controlled to prevent the subject from passing through the portal apparatus.

The portal apparatus of claim 11 wherein the subject is instructed to look straight ahead, and if it is determined from analysis of the images that the subject is not looking ahead, the door panels cease moving with the subject and the subject is told to reverse direction and exit the portal apparatus.

13. The portal apparatus of claim 9 wherein the captured images are analyzed to determine an identity of the subject in order to determine if the subject should be allowed to pass through the portal apparatus;

and

wherein if from the subject'"'"'s determined identify, it is determined that the subject should not be allowed to pass, the door panel facing the subject is controlled to prevent the subject from passing through the portal apparatus.

14. The portal apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of said at least two door panels includes at least one image scanning detector and at least one image scanning emitter.

15. The portal apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of said at least two door panels comprises two image scanning detectors and two image scanning emitters mounted thereon;

wherein a first of said two image scanning detectors and a first of said two image scanning emitters are mounted on a first side of each door panel, and a second of said image scanning detectors and a second of said image scanning emitters are mounted on a second side of the door panel.

16. The portal apparatus of claim 15 wherein two of said at least two door panels move with the subject walking through the passageway, with a first of said at least two door panels located in front of the subject and a second of said at least two door panels located behind the subject;

and

wherein one of the scanning emitters mounted on the first door panel of the two door panels emits toward the subject, and one of the scanning detectors mounted on the second door panel of the two door panels faces in the direction of the subject.

17. The portal apparatus of claim 15 wherein two of said at least two door panels move with the subject walking through the passageway, with a first of said at least two door panels in located in front of the subject and a second of said at least two door panels located behind the subject;

and

wherein one of the scanning emitters mounted on the second door panel of the two door panels emits toward the subject, and one of the scanning detectors mounted on the first door panel of the two door panels faces in the direction of the subject.

18. The portal apparatus of claim 15 wherein two of said at least two door panels move with the subject walking through the passageway, with a first of said at least two door panels located in front of the subject and a second of said at least two door panels located behind the subject;

and

wherein for a first subject walking through the passageway, one of the scanning emitters mounted on the first door panel of the two door panels emits toward the subject, and one of the scanning detectors mounted on the first door panel of the two door panels faces in the direction of the subject.

19. The portal apparatus of claim 15 wherein two of said at least two door panels move with the subject walking through the passageway with a first of said at least two door panels located in front of the subject and a second of said at least two door panels located behind the subject;

and

wherein for a first subject walking through the passageway, one of the scanning emitters mounted on the second door panel of the two door panels emits toward the subject, and one of the scanning detectors mounted on the second door panel of the two door panels faces in the direction of the subject.
