Abstract

A light source in a rotary optical encoder can illuminate a pattern on a rotatable shaft and an optical sensor can detect either the light that is reflected or transmitted based on the pattern. A sampling rate of the optical sensor is dynamically adjusted based on a rotational speed of the rotatable shaft. A pulse rate of the light source may also be dynamically adjusted based on the sampling rate of the optical sensor.

Claims

1. A method of dynamically adjusting a sampling rate of an optical encoder in an electronic device, the optical encoder including an optical sensor comprising multiple light sensing elements, the method comprising:

sampling signals from two or more light sensing elements at a first time;

sampling signals from the two or more light sensing elements at a second time; and

adjusting the sampling rate of the two or more light sensing elements based on the sampled signals at the first time and the sampled signals at the second time.

2. The method as in claim 1, further comprising emitting light at a rotatable shaft.

3. The method as in claim 2, further comprising:

determining a rotational speed of the rotatable shaft based on the sampled signals at the first time and the sampled signals at the second time; and

adjusting the sampling rate of the two or more light sensing elements based on the rotational speed.

4. The method as in claim 1, further comprising:

determining a first phase offset based on the sampled signals at the first time; and

determining a second phase offset based on the sampled signals at the second time.

5. The method is in claim 4, further comprising:

determining a rotational speed of the rotatable shaft based on the first phase offset and the second phase offset; and

adjusting the sampling rate of the two or more light sensing elements based on the rotational speed.

6. The method as in claim 5, further comprising:

prior to adjusting the sampling rate, determining if the rotational speed is equal to or greater than a speed threshold; and

increasing the sampling rate if the rotational speed is equal to or greater than the speed threshold.

7. The method as in claim 4, further comprising determining a phase delta by subtracting the first phase offset from the second phase offset.

8. The method as in claim 7, wherein adjusting the sampling rate of the two or more light sensing elements based on the comparison of the first and second phase offsets comprises adjusting the sampling rate of the two or more light sensing elements based on the phase delta.

9. The method as in claim 8, further comprising:

prior to adjusting the sampling rate, determining if the phase delta is equal to or greater than a first phase delta threshold; and

increasing the sampling rate if the phase delta is equal to or greater than the first phase delta threshold.

10. The method as in claim 8, further comprising:

prior to adjusting the sampling rate, determining if the phase delta is equal to or less than a second phase delta threshold; and

decreasing the sampling rate if the phase delta is equal to or less than the second phase delta threshold.

11. The method as in claim 10, further comprising:

prior to decreasing the sampling rate, determining if the sampling rate is at a minimum sampling rate; and

maintaining the sampling rate if the sampling rate is at the minimum sampling rate.

12. The method as in claim 1, further comprising adjusting a pulse rate of a light source based on the sampling rate of the two or more light sensing elements.

13. An electronic device, comprising:

a rotatable shaft;

a light source positioned adjacent to the rotatable shaft and configured to illuminate the rotatable shaft;

an optical sensor comprising a plurality of light sensing elements positioned adjacent to the rotatable shaft and configured to receive at least a portion of light reflected off the rotatable shaft; and

a sampling rate control module operably connected to the optical sensor and configured to;

sample signals from two or more light sensing elements at a first time;

sample signals from the two or more light sensing elements at a second time; and

adjust a sampling rate of the optical encoder based on the sampled signals at the first time and the sampled signals at the second time.

14. The electronic device as in claim 13, wherein the sampling rate control module is further configured to:

determine a rotational speed of the rotatable shaft based on the sampled signals at the first time and the sampled signals at the second time; and

adjust the sampling rate of the two or more light sensing elements based on the rotational speed.

15. The electronic device as in claim 13, further comprising one or more sensors operably connected to the sampling rate control module, the one or more sensors comprising at least one of an accelerometer or a proximity sensor, wherein the sampling rate control module is further configured to:

receive a signal from at least one sensor; and

adjust the sampling rate of the optical encoder based on the sampled signals at the first time, the sampled signals at the second time, and the signal received from the at least one sensor.

16. The electronic device as in claim 13, wherein at least one light sensing element comprises a photodiode and the light source comprises a light-emitting diode.

17. The electronic device as in claim 13, wherein the sampling rate control module is configured to adjust a pulse rate of the light source based on the sampling rate of the optical encoder.

18. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon executable instructions which, when executed by a processing device, causes the processing device to perform a method of dynamically adjusting a sampling rate of an optical encoder, the method comprising:

sampling signals from two or more light sensing elements in an optical sensor at a first time;

sampling signals from the two or more light sensing elements at a second time; and

adjusting a sampling rate of the optical sensor based on the sampled signals at the first time and the sampled signals at the second time.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium as in claim 18, wherein

the method further comprises:

determining a first phase offset based on the sampled signals at the first time; and

determining a second phase offset based on the sampled signals at the second time; and

adjusting the sampling rate of the optical sensor comprises;

determining a phase delta by subtracting the first phase offset from the second phase offset; and

adjusting the sampling rate of the optical sensor based on the phase delta.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium as in claim 19, wherein adjusting the sampling rate of the optical sensor based on the phase delta comprises:

comparing the phase delta to a first phase delta threshold;

increasing the sampling rate if the phase delta is equal to or greater than the first phase delta threshold;

if the phase delta is less than the first phase delta threshold, comparing the phase delta to a second phase delta threshold;

decreasing the sampling rate if the phase delta is equal to or less than the second phase delta threshold; and

maintaining the sampling rate if the phase delta is less than the second phase delta threshold.
