Abstract

Described herein are methods, compositions, systems, and kits that effectively deliver a laxative to a patient along with effective electrolyte replenishment by delivering both a laxative and electrolytes via a food item. The food item is prepared by either combining, mixing, or integrating the ingredients that form the food item together with one of or both of a laxative and electrolytes so that the ingredients in the food item either eliminate or significantly reduce the poor taste associated with either the electrolytes or the laxative. Eliminating or reducing the poor taste associated with either electrolytes or laxative, greatly improves patient satisfaction and compliance with ingesting these substances in order to, for example, prepare the GI tract of the patient for a medical or surgical procedure.

Claims

1. A composition comprising a food item comprising more than 50% by weight of a polyethylene glycol based laxative.

2. The composition of claim 1, wherein said food item comprises a plurality of food ingredients, and said food item is prepared by mixing said polyethylene glycol based laxative together with said food ingredients.

3. The composition of claim 1, further comprising rice syrup, and wherein the rice syrup is about 25% to about 40% by weight of said food item.

4. The composition of claim 1, further comprising coconut oil.

5. The composition of claim 4, wherein the coconut oil is about 1.5% to about 3.0% by weight of said food item.

6. The composition of claim 1, further comprising glycerin.

7. The composition of claim 6, wherein said glycerin comprises about 1.0% to about 3.0% by weight of said food item.

8. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a flavorant, and wherein the flavorant is a lemon, mint, ginger, pepper, vanilla, chocolate, or caramel flavorant.

9. The composition of claim 1, further comprising electrolytes, and wherein said electrolytes comprise sodium chloride, potassium chloride, potassium bicarbonate, and magnesium chloride.

10. The composition of claim 1, wherein said food item comprises a bar.

11. A composition comprising a plurality of food ingredients mixed with 1-500 milligrams of sodium, 1-50 milligrams of potassium, 1-750 ml of water, and 5-150 grams of a laxative

12. The composition of claim 11, wherein said plurality of food ingredients comprise at least one grain.

13. The composition of claim 11, wherein said plurality of food ingredients comprise at least one of meat or fish.

14. The composition of claim 11, wherein said plurality of food ingredients comprise at least one starch.

15. The composition of claim 11, wherein said laxative comprises a PEG containing compound, and wherein said PEG comprises PEG 3350

16. The composition of claim 15, wherein said PEG 3350 comprises at least 50% by weight of said composition.

17. The composition of claim 11, wherein said plurality of food ingredients comprise low fiber ingredients.
