METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR PROGRAMMING A MEDICAL PUMP
First Claim
1. :
- An infusion pump apparatus for administrating an infusion therapy to a patient, the apparatus comprising;
a memory including(i) drug library files each for a different medication, each of the drug library files including program parameter limits for the respective medication including an accumulated medication dosage limit for a designated time period, and(ii) program parameters for controlling the administration of the infusion therapy including a dose per administration program parameter;
an interface configured toreceive a medication name of a medication to be administered for the infusion therapy and related program parameter values including a dose per administration program parameter value, andreceive status information for every administration of the medication that occurs during the infusion therapy; and
a controller communicatively coupled to the interface and the memory and configured to;
select a drug library file that corresponds to the received medication name,determine a number of times the status information is received within the designated time period from a current time during the infusion therapy,determine if the number of times the status information is received comports with the accumulated medication dosage limit using the dose per administration program parameter, andresponsive to the number of times the status information is received matching or exceeding the accumulated medication dosage limit, preventing another administration of the medication until enough time has passed such that the number of times the status information has been received within the designated time period from the current time is less than the accumulated medication dosage limit.

Abstract
A controller for a programmable medical pump is configured to select a drug library file that corresponds to a received medication name and determine a number of times status information is received within a designated time period from a current time during an infusion therapy. The example controller is also configured to determine if the number of times the status information is received comports with an accumulated medication dosage limit using a dose per administration program parameter. Responsive to the number of times the status information is received matching or exceeding the accumulated medication dosage limit, the controller is configured to prevent another administration of the medication until enough time has passed such that the number of times the status information has been received within the designated time period from the current time is less than the accumulated medication dosage limit.
