Abstract

A system and method for detecting and measuring changes in angular position with respect to a reference plane is useful in surgical procedures for orienting various instruments, prosthesis, and implants with respect to anatomical landmarks. One embodiment of the device uses dual orientation devices of a type capable of measuring angular position changes from a reference position. One such device provides information as to changes in position of an anatomical landmark relative to a reference position. The second device provides information as to changes in position of a surgical instrument and/or prosthesis relative to the reference position.

21. A system for tracking a position during a joint procedure, the system comprising:

a surgical orientation device located within a surgical field and movable relative to a patient adjacent to a joint, the surgical orientation device comprising;

a housing having a body which forms an enclosed portion;

a visual indicator integrated in or on the housing, the visual indicator configured to indicate when a positional property of interest has been reached and/or not reached and/or exceeded;

one or more sensors configured to provide positional signals, wherein the sensors are directly integrated into the body of the housing, mounted onto or coupled to the body of the housing, adhered to the housing, located inside the housing, or fabricated directly on the surface of the housing;

a zero button configured to be depressed by the user to set a zero condition of the surgical orientation device; and

a processor configured to store the zero condition of the surgical orientation device and compare the output of the one or more sensors to the zero condition, the processor configured to output information to the visual indicator related to the positional property; and

at least one coupler configured for releasably attaching the surgical orientation device with one or more instruments allowing the surgical orientation device to be transferable from instrument to instrument within an implant system or systems.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the visual indicator comprises a digital display configured to display an angle.

23. The system of claim 21, wherein the one or more sensors comprise at least one accelerometer and at least one gyroscope.

24. The system of claim 21, further comprising an instrument configured to support an acetabular prosthetic socket, wherein the surgical orientation device when coupled to the instrument is configured to display an angle.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the surgical orientation device when coupled to the instrument is configured to display abduction and anterversion angles.

26. The system of claim 21, wherein the zero condition is a reference plane.

27. The system of claim 21, further comprising a secondary device comprising one or more sensors configured for providing positional signals.

28. The system of claim 27, wherein the processor is programmed to receive as input values reflecting positional changes measured by the surgical orientation device and the secondary device, to perform arithmetic calculations on these values, and to generate an output.

29. A method comprising:

providing a surgical orientation device of claim 21, releasably attaching the surgical orientation device with an instrument; and

depressing the zero button to set a zero condition of the surgical orientation device

wherein the processor stores the zero condition of the surgical orientation device and compare the output of the one or more sensors to the zero condition.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the processor outputs information to the visual indicator related to the positional property.

31. The method of claim 29, further comprising displaying an angle on a digital display.

32. The method of claim 29, wherein the one or more sensors comprise at least one accelerometer and at least one gyroscope.

33. The method of claim 29, further comprising supporting an acetabular prosthetic socket with an instrument, further comprising displaying an angle when the surgical orientation device is coupled to the instrument.

34. The method of claim 29, further comprising supporting an acetabular prosthetic socket with an instrument, further comprising displaying abduction and anterversion angles when the surgical orientation device is coupled to the instrument.

35. The method of claim 29, wherein the positioning property of interest is an angle.

36. The method of claim 29, further comprising depressing the button to establish a reference plane.

37. The method of claim 29, further comprising a secondary device comprising one or more sensors configured for providing positional signals.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein the processor is programmed to receive as input values reflecting positional changes measured by the surgical orientation device and the secondary device, to perform arithmetic calculations on these values, and to generate an output.
