Abstract

A method of a charging apparatus for controlling wireless charging is provided. The method includes detecting an electronic device, determining a charging method corresponding to the detected electronic device, and wirelessly charging the electronic device by selecting a coil corresponding to the determined charging method.

Claims

1. A method of a charging apparatus for controlling wireless charging, the method comprising:

detecting an electronic device;

identifying a charging method corresponding to the detected electronic device; and

wirelessly charging the electronic device by selecting a coil corresponding to the determined charging method.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the detecting of the electronic device comprises transmitting a power beacon through a coil for induction detection and a power beacon through a coil for resonance detection.

The method according to claim 2, further comprising, when the electronic device is detected, transmitting a power beacon for induction detection of a. greater power strength than the transmitted power beacon for induction detection and a power beacon for resonance detection of a greater power strength than the transmitted power beacon for resonance detection through each corresponding coil.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the identifying of the charging method comprises identifying whether the electronic device is to be charged by a magnetic induction method or by a magnetic resonance method according to the charging method of the electronic device.

5. The method according to claim 3, wherein the identifying of the charging method comprises:

when a broadcast signal is received from the electronic device through in-band communication in response to the transmission of the power beacon for induction detection, identifying that the electronic device is to be charged by a magnetic induction method; and

when a broadcast signal is received from the electronic device through out-of-band communication in response to the transmission of the power beacon for resonance detection, identifying that the electronic device is to be charged by a magnetic resonance method.

6. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

transmitting a power beacon to each of a plurality of induction coils that are provided in the charging apparatus;

measuring an amount of change in an impedance of each of the plurality of induction coils; and

selecting a coil from among the plurality of induction coils for wirelessly providing power to the electronic device based on the amount of change in the impedance.

7. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

detecting another electronic device while the electronic device is wirelessly charged,

identifying a charging method corresponding to the other electronic device, and

wirelessly providing power to the other electronic device through a coil corresponding to the identified charging method of the other electronic device.

8. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

detecting a plurality of electronic devices,

identifying a corresponding charging method corresponding to each of the plurality of electronic devices, and

wirelessly providing power to each of the plurality of electronic devices through a coil corresponding to the corresponding charging method identified for each of the plurality of electronic devices.

9. A charging apparatus for controlling wireless charging, the charging apparatus comprising:

a power transmitter including a plurality of coils for wirelessly charging; and

a controller configured to;

control to detect an electronic device,

identify a charging method corresponding to the detected electronic device, and

control the wireless charging of the electronic device by selecting a coil from among the plurality of coils corresponding to the determined charging method.

10. The charging apparatus according to claim 9, further comprising a power amplifying circuit that includes a plurality of amplifiers for amplifying the power supplied to each of the plurality of coils.

11. The charging apparatus according to claim 9, the plurality of coils comprises at least one induction coil and at least one resonance coil.

12. The charging apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the controller is further configured to:

control a first driver to transmit a power beacon for resonance detection through the at least one resonance coil for detecting the electronic device, and

control a second driver to transmit a power beacon for induction detection through the at least one induction coil for detecting the electronic device.

The charging apparatus according to claim 12, wherein when the electronic device is detected, the controller is further configured to control the first driver to transmit a power beacon for induction detection of a greater power strength than the transmitted power beacon for induction detection through the at least one induction coil and a power beacon for resonance detection of a greater power strength than the transmitted power beacon for resonance detection through the at least one resonance coil.

14. The charging apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the controller is further configured to identify whether the electronic device is to be charged by a magnetic induction method or by a magnetic resonance method according to the charging method of the electronic device

15. The charging apparatus according to claim 13,

wherein when a broadcast signal is received from the electronic device through in-band communication in response to the transmission of the power beacon for induction detection, the controller is further configured to identify that the electronic device is to be charged by a magnetic induction method, and

wherein when a broadcast signal is received from the electronic device through out-of-band communication in response to the transmission of the power beacon for resonance detection, the controller is further configured to identify that the electronic device is to be charged by a magnetic resonance method.

16. The charging apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the controller is further configured to:

transmit a power beacon to each of the at least one induction coil;

measure an amount of change in an impedance of each of the at least one induction coil; and

select, based on the amount of change in the impedance, a coil from among the at least one induction coil for wirelessly providing power to the electronic device.

17. The charging apparatus according to claim 9, wherein when another electronic device is detected while the electronic device is wirelessly charged, the controller further configured to:

identify a charging method corresponding to the other electronic device, and

wirelessly provide power to the other electronic device through a coil corresponding to the determined charging method of the other electronic device.

18. The charging apparatus according to claim 9, wherein when a plurality of electronic devices is detected, the controller is further configured to:

identify a corresponding charging method for each of the detected plurality of electronic devices, and

wirelessly provide power to each of the plurality of electronic devices through a coil corresponding to the corresponding charging method identified for each of the plurality of the of electronic devices.

19. The charging apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the power transmitter comprises a coil according to a first wireless charging method and a coil according to a second wireless charging method.

20. The charging apparatus according to claim 10, wherein the power transmitter comprises a first coil according to a first wireless charging method and a second coil according to a second wireless charging method, which is surrounded by the first coil.
