Abstract

Updating web resources includes extracting web resources from an application to local files in response to an initial start-up of the application, downloading updates to the web resources to the local files from an external server; and running the application using contents from the local files.

Claims

1. A method for updating web resources, comprising, with a processor to access and execute computer readable instructions stored on a non-transitory computer readable storage medium,

extracting web resources from an application to local files in response to an initial start-up of the application;

downloading updates to the web resources to the local files from an external server; and

running the application using contents from the local files.

The method of claim 1, further comprising downloading the application prior to the extracting, wherein the application, as downloaded, comprises machine readable instructions to extract the web resources which are pre-packaged in the downloaded application, the method further comprising executing the instructions pre-packaged in the downloaded application to extract the web resources.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising executing a private browser of the application for accessing the web resources of the local files.

The method of claim 1, further comprising querying the external server to identify additional updates to the web resources in response to any of start-up of the application, an expiration of a run time of the system, a change in a foreground/background status of the application, or a closure of the application.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising downloading specific updates specific to a client device that override common updates that are compatible with multiple client devices.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising, upon an initial startup of the application, using only the web resources extracted from the application and, upon a subsequent application startup, querying the external server for an update to the web resources.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising recognizing a resource indicator of an update in response to downloading that update from the external server, wherein the resource indicator is a web resource version identification.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising recognizing a resource indicator of an update in response to downloading that update from the external server, wherein the resource indicator is a target operating system identification.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising using an older version of the web resources from the local files while an update is downloading.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving updates that include specific updates that are targeted to a specific operating system and receiving common updates that are targeted to multiple operating systems.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising overriding a common update with a specific update in response to a conflict between the common and specific updates.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising operating the application and local files in a native container, the native container providing an interface for the application.

13. A method for updating web resources, comprising, with a processor to access and execute computer readable instructions stored on a non-transitory computer readable storage medium,

downloading an application comprising web resources to a client device;

extracting the web resources from the application to permanent local files in response to an initial start-up of the application;

querying an external server to identify updates to the web resources, the updates comprising a resource indictor comprising an identification for an operating system of the client device;

downloading updates to the web resources to the permanent local files from the external server; and

running the application using contents from the local files.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the resource indicator also comprises a web resource version identification.

15. The method of claim 13, further comprising running the application during a non-connectivity period with the external server.

16. The method of claim 13, further comprising operating the application and local files in a native container on the client device, the native container providing an interface for the application.

The method of claim 16, wherein downloading updates to the web resources to the local files from an external serves includes downloading an update bundle marked with a native container identification with which the client device determines for which version of the native container the update applies.

18. A method for updating web resources, comprising, with a processor to access and execute computer readable instructions stored on a non-transitory computer readable storage medium,

downloading an application comprising web resources client device, wherein the web resources are pre-packages in the application as downloaded;

extracting the web resources from the application to permanent local files in response to an initial start-up of the application;

querying an external server to identify updates to the web resources in response to any start-up of the application and downloading any identified updates to the web resources to the permanent local files from the external server; and

running the application using contents from the local files.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising querying the external server to identify additional updates to the web resources in response to any of an expiration of a run time of the system, a change in a foreground/background status of the application, or a closure of the application.

20. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

receiving updates that include specific updates that are targeted to a specific operating system and receiving common updates that are targeted to multiple operating systems; and

overriding a common update with a specific update in response to a conflict between the common and specific updates.
