Abstract

A method for delivering a target volume of fluid to a destination is provided. The method includes delivering a first volume of fluid to the destination in increments each having approximately a first incremental volume, the first volume of fluid being less than the target volume and delivering a second volume of fluid to the destination in increments each having approximately a second incremental volume, the second incremental volume being less than the first incremental volume, such that the sum of the first volume and the second volume is approximately equal to the target volume.

27. A method for delivering a volume of medical fluid, the system comprising:

pumping fluid in a first volume increment using a first pump chamber;

pumping fluid in a first volume increment using a second pump chamber;

repeating the first two pumping acts until a predetermined amount of fluid is delivered;

determining which of the first and second pump chambers pumped the least amount of fluid;

pumping fluid in a second volume increment using the determined one of the first and second pump chambers that pumped the least amount of fluid; and

repeating pumping of the second volume increments until the total volume pumped equals a target volume.

28. The method according to claim 27, wherein the predetermined amount of fluid approximately equals the target volume minus a finish volume.

29. The method according to claim 28, wherein the second volume increment is less than the finish volume.

30. The method according to claim 28, wherein the second volume increment is ⅓

of the finish volume.

31. The method according to claim 27, further comprising measuring the fluid discharged from the first and second pump chambers.

32. The method according to claim 27, further comprising an act of monitoring the delivery of first incremental volume and second incremental volume and adjusting at least one of the first and second pumping chambers.

33. The method according to claim 27, further comprising an acts of:

monitoring each of the delivered second incremental volumes after delivery of each of the second incremental volume and communicating the delivered volume to the controller, and

determining if another second incremental volume should be delivered.

34. The method according to claim 27, wherein when a cumulative volume of fluid delivered is greater than the predetermined amount, the controller uses one of the first and second pump chambers to deliver a plurality of sub-stroke volumes until the target volume is delivered.

35. The method according to claim 27, wherein the first and second pump chambers repeat coordinated pumping action until the remaining amount of fluid to be delivered is less than a predetermined threshold and thereby the predetermined amount of fluid has been delivered.

36. The method according to claim 27, further comprising measuring a volume of fluid after halting delivery from the most recently used pump chamber when a last first fluid increment is delivered.

37. The method according to claim 27, further comprising delivering the second volume of fluid in the second volume increments using the pump chamber which pumped the least fluid, the second volume increments being approximately 3 ml or less.

38. The method according to claim 27, wherein the method further comprises approximately reaching a midpoint of a target mode tolerance range during a last delivery of the second incremental fill volumes.

39. The method according to claim 27, wherein the method comprises acting on, in a targeting mode, via the controller, the one of the first and second chambers that delivered the least volume during the delivery of the first.

43. A method for operation of a cassette configured to pump a volume of fluid, the cassette having at least a membrane with at least a first and second membrane portion the method comprising:

actuating the first membrane portion to move fluid in approximately a first volume increment;

actuating the second membrane portion to move fluid in approximately the first volume increment;

repeating the first two pumping acts until a predetermined amount of fluid is delivered;

determining which of the first and second pump chambers pumped the least amount of fluid;

pumping fluid in a second volume increment using the determined one of the first and second pump chambers that pumped the least amount of fluid; and

repeating pumping of second volume increments until the total volume pumped equals a target volume.
