Abstract

Sensing and infusion devices are described. In one embodiment, a sensing and infusion device may include an implantable segment having a sensor. The sensing and infusion device may also include a catheter, and a sensor channel may be formed in the catheter. The sensor channel may be configured to retain at least a portion of the implantable segment.

Claims

1. A sensing and infusion device, the device comprising:

an implantable segment having a sensor;

a catheter; and

a sensor channel formed in the catheter, the sensor channel configured to retain at least a portion of the implantable segment.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the implantable segment is elongate and flat.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the sensor channel is open to an exterior of the catheter.

4. The device of claim 3, wherein the sensor channel is open to an exterior of the catheter along an entire length of the sensor channel.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the sensor channel extends from a proximal portion to a distal portion of the catheter.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the sensor channel extends along an entire length of the catheter.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the sensor channel is parallel to a longitudinal axis of the catheter.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the sensor channel has a cross section that narrows towards an outer surface of the catheter.

9. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

a slot positioned at a distal portion of the sensor channel, the slot configured to receive at least a portion of a distal portion of the implantable segment.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the sensor includes a glucose sensor.

11. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

an infusion lumen formed in the catheter; and

an infusion port formed in the catheter in fluid communication with the infusion lumen.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein the infusion port is distal to the sensor.

13. The device of claim 12, further comprising:

a backflow reduction device coupled proximal to the infusion port and distal to the sensor, the backflow reduction device configured to reduce an amount of an infusate flowing from the infusion port back to the sensor.

14. The device of claim 13, wherein the backflow reduction device includes a widened portion of the catheter.

15. The device of claim 13, wherein the backflow reduction device includes a distal portion of the implantable segment protruding from the sensor channel.

16. The device of claim 11, wherein the infusion port is proximal to the sensor.

17. The device of claim 11, further comprising:

an infusate sink coupled to the implantable segment, the infusate sink configured to neutralize at least a portion of an infusate.

18. The device of claim 11, further comprising:

a blanking electrode coupled to the implantable segment, the blanking electrode configured to measure a property of an infusate.

19. A sensing and infusion device, the device comprising:

an implantable segment having a sensor;

a catheter; and

means for coupling at least a portion of the implantable segment to the catheter.

20. A method for in vivo sensing and infusing, the method comprising:

implanting in an implantation site an implantable segment and a catheter, the implantable segment having a sensor, the catheter having a sensor channel formed in the catheter, the sensor channel configured to retain at least a portion of the implantable segment;

obtaining information about an analyte using the sensor; and

delivering an infusate using the catheter.
