1. A method for providing feedback to a user in a virtual reality environment, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a virtual environment that is visible to the user;
providing a physical game controller;
providing a virtual object that represents the physical game controller but within the virtual environment;
disposing at least one proximity sensor on the physical game controller, wherein the at least one proximity sensor will detect an object approaching the at least one proximity sensor before contact is made;
detecting an object approaching the at least one proximity sensor on the physical game controller; and
providing a visual indicator in the virtual environment that the object is approaching the physical game controller.

Abstract
A system and method for providing a virtual reality game controller with improved functionality by providing capacitive touch and proximity sensors on the controller to enable additional feedback to the user such that interaction with a physical object such as a game controller may be translated into interaction with a virtual tool in a virtual environment such as providing a visual indication in the virtual environment that a finger or thumb is approaching a button of a physical game controller.

11. A system for providing feedback to a user in a virtual reality environment, said system comprised of:
-
a virtual environment that is visible to the user; a physical game controller; a virtual object that represents the physical game controller but within the virtual environment; at least one proximity sensor disposed on the physical game controller, wherein the at least one proximity sensor will detect an object approaching the at least one proximity sensor before contact is made; and a visual indicator in the virtual environment that indicates that the object is approaching the physical game controller. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)

19. A method for providing feedback to a user in a virtual reality environment, said method comprising the steps of:
-
providing a virtual environment that is visible to the user; providing a physical game controller; providing a virtual object that represents the physical game controller but within the virtual environment; disposing at least one proximity sensor on the physical game controller, wherein the at least one proximity sensor will detect an object approaching the at least one proximity sensor before contact is made; detecting an object approaching the at least one proximity sensor on the physical game controller; and providing a visual indicator in the virtual environment that the object is approaching the physical game controller, and changing the visual indicator to thereby indicate a distance of the object from the physical game controller.
