Abstract

One method for estimating the extracorporeal blood volume in a portion of a physical sample includes: extracting a feature from a portion of an image of the sample; tagging the portion of the image of the sample with a blood volume indicator according to the extracted feature; and estimating the extracorporeal blood volume in at least the portion of the physical sample, associated with the portion of the image of the sample, according to the blood volume indicator.

29. A method for estimating extracorporeal fluids from a patient, the method comprising:

extracting a feature from an image of a first physical sample, wherein the first physical sample comprises at least one extracorporeal fluid;

determining a fluid volume indicator based on the extracted feature;

estimating a first extracorporeal fluid volume in at least a portion of the first physical sample based on the fluid volume indicator; and

estimating a second extracorporeal fluid volume in a second physical sample based at least in part on a weight or mass of the second physical sample.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein at least one of the physical samples is a textile.

31. The method of claim 29, wherein at least one of the physical samples is a fluid container.

32. The method of claim 29, wherein the second extracorporeal fluid volume comprises a non-blood fluid.

33. The method of claim 29, wherein estimating the second extracorporeal fluid volume comprises subtracting at least a dry weight of the second physical sample from a wet weight of the second physical sample.

34. The method of claim 29, wherein estimating the second extracorporeal fluid volume comprises subtracting at least a dry mass of the second physical sample from a wet mass of the second physical sample.

35. The method of claim 29, wherein the extracted feature comprises a color-related value.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein the color-related value is a color intensity.

37. The method of claim 29, further comprising displaying a total estimated fluid volume including at least one of the first and second extracorporeal fluid volumes.

38. The method of claim 29, wherein determining a fluid volume indicator comprises transforming the extracted feature into the fluid volume indicator according to a parametric model.

39. The method of claim 29, wherein determining a fluid volume indicator comprises matching at least a portion of the image to a template image.

40. A system for estimating extracorporeal fluids from a patient, the system comprising:

an optical sensor configured to capture an image of at least a portion of a first physical sample;

a scale configured to determine a weight or mass of a second physical sample; and

a processor configured to;

extract a feature from the image of at least a portion of the first physical sample;

estimate a first extracorporeal fluid volume in at least a portion of the first physical sample based on a fluid volume indicator correlated to the extracted feature; and

estimate a second extracorporeal fluid volume in the second physical sample based at least in part on the weight or mass of the second physical sample.

41. The system of claim 40, further comprising a display configured to display a total estimated fluid volume including at least one of the first and second extracorporeal fluid volumes.

42. The system of claim 40, wherein at least one of the physical samples is a textile.

43. The system of claim 40, wherein at least one of the physical samples is a fluid container.

44. The system of claim 43, wherein the fluid container is a fluid canister.

45. The system of claim 40, wherein the second extracorporeal fluid volume comprises a non-blood fluid.

46. The system of claim 40, wherein the processor is configured to estimate the second extracorporeal fluid volume by subtracting at least a dry weight of the second physical sample from a wet weight of the second physical sample or subtracting at least a dry mass of the second physical sample from a wet mass of the second physical sample.

47. The system of claim 40, wherein the extracted feature comprises a color-related value.

48. The system of claim 40, wherein the processor is configured to tag at least a portion of the image of the first physical sample with a fluid volume indicator according to the extracted feature.

49. The system of claim 48, wherein the processor is configured to transform the extracted feature into the fluid volume indicator according to a parametric model.

50. The system of claim 48, wherein the processor is configured to match at least a portion of the image to a template image to determine the fluid volume indicator.
