Abstract

Various embodiments include a device that implements a high bandwidth wireless data interface for communication between the device and a device accessory. The device can include an external shell and a display (e.g., a touchscreen). In some embodiments, the external shell and the display together hermetically seal various other components of the device. In various embodiments, the device includes an attachment mechanism, an alignment mechanism (e.g., for magnetic alignment between a device and a device accessory), a wireless data transceiver, and a wired or wireless energy source (e.g., for sharing power between the device and the device accessory). The wireless data transceiver can transmit data at extremely high electromagnetic frequencies between the device in the device accessory.

Claims

1. A wireless audio accessory comprising:

an external shell defining an outer surface of the wireless audio accessory, the external shell comprising a non-metallic region;

a wireless data transceiver enclosed by the external shell and disposed proximate to the non-metallic region of the external shell, the wireless data transceiver exchanging data through the non-metallic region of the external shell with a device;

an energy source enclosed by the external shell, the energy source receiving energy from the device;

a sensing switch, enclosed by the external shell, detecting when the device is proximate to the wireless audio accessory and, responsive thereto, activating the energy source;

a dual attachment mechanism comprising a magnetic member and a pin, enclosed by the external shell, securing the wireless audio accessory proximate to the device, and activating the sensing switch when the wireless audio accessory is secured to the device; and

an audio output mechanism associated with the wireless data transceiver and communicating data received by the wireless audio accessory from the device to an external audio device.

2. The wireless audio accessory of claim 1, the dual attachment mechanism comprising a ferromagnetic material enclosed within the external shell, the ferromagnetic material proximate to a non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region of the external shell, the ferromagnetic material to attach to a magnet proximate to the ferromagnetic material.

3. The wireless audio accessory of claim 1, the audio output mechanism comprising an audio jack or a wireless transmitter transmitting data.

4. An accessory comprising:

an external shell defining an outer surface of the accessory, the external shell comprising a non-metallic region, and a non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region;

a wireless data transceiver enclosed by the external shell and disposed proximate to the non-metallic region of the external shell, the wireless data transceiver transmitting data through the non-metallic region of the external shell at electromagnetic frequencies between the accessory and a device;

an energy source enclosed by the external shell and disposed proximate to the non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region of the external shell, the energy source transmitting energy through the non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region of the external shell between the accessory and the device;

a dual attachment mechanism comprising a magnetic member and a pin securing the accessory to the device; and

a data output mechanism associated with the wireless data transceiver and communicating data received by the accessory from the device to a second device.

5. The accessory of claim 4, the data output mechanism comprising an audio jack or a wireless transmitter transmitting data.

6. The accessory of claim 4, the data output mechanism comprising a digital to analog converter coupled to the wireless data transceiver and an analog audio jack.

7. The accessory of claim 4, the data output mechanism comprising an amplifier coupled to the wireless data transceiver and an audio jack.

8. The accessory of claim 4, the magnetic member comprising a magnet enclosed within the external shell, the magnet proximate to the non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region of the external shell, the magnet attaching to a ferromagnetic material proximate to the magnet.

9. The accessory of claim 4, the energy source comprising:

an energy storage receiving and storing energy; and

a wireless energy source connected to the energy storage, the wireless energy source wirelessly receiving energy from the device.

10. The accessory of claim 4, the magnetic member comprising:

a ferromagnetic material enclosed within the external shell, the ferromagnetic material proximate to the non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region of the external shell, the ferromagnetic material attaching to a magnet proximate to the ferromagnetic material.

11. The accessory of claim 4, the energy source comprising a solenoid conducting electric current induced by the device, and the energy source producing a magnetic field securing the accessory to the device.

12. The accessory of claim 4, comprising:

the energy source enclosed by the external shell and disposed proximate to a second non-metallic region of the external shell, the energy source transmitting energy through the second non-metallic region between the device and the accessory.

13. The accessory of claim 12, the energy source comprising:

an energy storage; and

a plurality of connectors connected to the energy storage, the plurality of connectors transmitting energy when in contact with a plurality of connectors of the device.

14. The accessory of claim 12, the energy source comprising:

an energy storage; and

a wireless energy source connected to the energy storage, the wireless energy source wirelessly receiving energy from the device.

15. The accessory of claim 12, comprising a sensing switch associated with the energy source, the sensing switch detecting when the device is proximate to the accessory and activating the wireless data transceiver.

16. The accessory of claim 15, the sensing switch comprising at least one of a Hall effect sensor, a proximity sensor, or a touch sensor.

17. The accessory of claim 15, the energy source comprising:

an energy storage producing electrical current when the sensing switch activates the energy source; and

a solenoid wirelessly transmitting energy between the device and the accessory, the solenoid providing energy to the energy storage.

18. The accessory of claim 15, the energy source comprising:

a circuit switch coupled to the sensing switch, the circuit switch enabling the wireless data transceiver to transmit data when the sensing switch detects the device is proximate to the accessory.

19. The accessory of claim 12, the energy source comprising:

a wireless energy source wirelessly receiving energy from the device, the wireless energy source providing power to the wireless data transceiver.

20. An apparatus comprising:

a device comprising;

a device external shell defining an outer surface of the device, the device external shell comprising a first non-metallic region;

a device wireless data transceiver disposed proximate to the first non-metallic region of the device external shell;

a device energy source;

an accessory comprising;

an external shell defining an outer surface of the accessory, the external shell comprising a second non-metallic region, and a non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region;

a wireless data transceiver wirelessly communicating with the device wireless data transceiver, the wireless data transceiver proximate to the second non-metallic region of the external shell;

a data output mechanism to transmit data between the device and an external audio receiver when the accessory is proximate to the device;

a dual attachment mechanism comprising a magnetic member and a pin securing the accessory to the device; and

an energy source to receive power from the device energy source when the accessory is proximate to the device.

21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the device energy source comprises a solenoid inducing an electric current in a corresponding solenoid of the wireless data transceiver, and the solenoid producing a magnetic field to secure the accessory to the device.

22. A method to manufacture an accessory comprising:

providing an external shell defining an outer surface of the accessory, said providing the external shell comprising providing a non-metallic region within the external shell;

disposing a wireless data transceiver proximate to the non-metallic region of the external shell, the wireless data transceiver to transmit data at extremely high electromagnetic frequencies through the non-metallic region of the external shell between the accessory and a device; and

providing a dual attachment mechanism comprising a magnetic member and a pin securing the accessory to the device.

24. The method of claim 22, said providing the dual attachment mechanism comprising:

enclosing a ferromagnetic material operable to attach to a magnet proximate to the ferromagnetic material; and

defining a non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region of the external shell proximate to the ferromagnetic material, such that the ferromagnetic material can attach to the magnet through the non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region.

25. The method of claim 22, said providing the dual attachment mechanism comprising:

enclosing a magnet operable to attach to a ferromagnetic material proximate to the magnet; and

defining a non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region of the external shell proximate to the magnet, such that the magnet can attach to the ferromagnetic material through the non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region.

26. The method of claim 22, comprising:

providing the external shell defining the outer surface of the accessory, said providing the external shell comprising providing a non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region within the external shell; and

disposing an energy source proximate to the non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region, the energy source to transmit energy through the non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region between the device in proximity to the accessory and the accessory.

27. The method of claim 26, said disposing the energy source comprising:

disposing an energy storage within the external shell; and

disposing a plurality of connectors connected to the energy storage proximate to the non-metallic region, the plurality of connectors to transmit energy when in contact with a plurality of connectors of the device.

28. The method of claim 26, said disposing the energy source comprising:

disposing an energy storage within the external shell; and

disposing a wireless energy source coupled to the energy storage, the wireless energy source proximate to the non-ferromagnetic and non-magnetizable region, the wireless energy source to wirelessly receive energy from the device via induced electrical current flow in the wireless energy source of the accessory.

29. The method of claim 26, comprising coupling a sensing switch to the energy source, the sensing switch to detect when the device is proximate to the accessory and to activate the energy source.

30. The accessory of claim 29, said disposing the energy source comprising:

configuring an energy storage to release energy when the sensing switch activates the energy source; and

configuring a plurality of connectors connected to the energy storage to transmit energy when in contact with a plurality of connectors of the device.
