Abstract

Disclosed herein are methods for pasteurizing architectural coating compositions using heat, radiation or other energy sources without additionally polymerizing the compositions and storing same.

Claims

1. A method for pasteurizing an architectural coating composition comprising the steps of

(i) preparing the architectural coating composition;

(ii) applying an energy source to said architectural composition to a pasteurizing level or a pasteurizing time duration without further polymerizing the architectural coating; and

(iii) storing the pasteurized architectural composition in containers.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the energy source is heat.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein step (ii) comprises the step of heating the architectural coating to a pasteurizing temperature for a pasteurizing duration.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein step (ii) comprises the step of heating the architectural coating substantially according to FIG. 3 and supporting texts.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the pasteurizing temperature is at least about 50°

C.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the pasteurizing temperature is at least about 60°

C.

7. The method of claim 2, wherein the pasteurizing temperature is at least about 70°

C.

8. The method of claim 2, wherein the pasteurizing duration ranges from about less than 3 minutes to at least 360 minutes.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the architectural coating composition is stored in containers before step (ii).

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the architectural coating composition contains biocides.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the architectural coating composition contains substantially no biocide.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the radiation source is gamma radiation.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein step (iii) comprises storing the pasteurized architectural coating composition at temperatures that discourages or inhibits growth of biological agents.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein said temperatures include temperatures below room temperature.
