SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR CONTROLLING FUEL FOR REACTIVATING ENGINE CYLINDERS
First Claim

1. An engine operating method, comprising:
- directly injecting fuel to a cylinder for a first combustion event in the cylinder after the cylinder is deactivated via ceasing combustion in the cylinder, the engine continuing to rotate without stopping an entire time while the cylinder is deactivated; and
port injecting fuel to the cylinder a first time after the cylinder is deactivated for a second combustion event in the cylinder after the cylinder is deactivated.

Abstract
Systems and methods for operating an engine with deactivating and non-deactivating valves are presented. In one example, fuel supplied to cylinders being reactivated is supplied by direct fuel injectors even though the engine is operating in a region (e.g., speed and torque) where under conditions where cylinders are not being reactivated the engine injects fuel solely via port fuel injectors.

7. A method for operating an engine, comprising:
-
in response to a rate of an increasing driver demand torque exceeding a threshold, directly injecting fuel to a cylinder for a first combustion event in the cylinder after the cylinder is deactivated via ceasing combustion in the cylinder, the engine continuing to rotate without stopping an entire time while the cylinder is deactivated; and in response to the rate of the increasing driver demand torque being less than the threshold, port injecting fuel to a cylinder for a first combustion event in the cylinder after the cylinder is deactivated via ceasing combustion in the cylinder, the engine continuing to rotate without stopping an entire time while the cylinder is deactivated. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14)

15. A vehicle system, comprising:
-
an engine including one or more deactivating cylinder poppet valves and a port fuel injector and a direct fuel injector for an engine cylinder, and a controller including non-transitory executable instructions, which when executed by the controller, cause the direct fuel injector to inject fuel to the engine cylinder for a first combustion event in the engine cylinder after the engine cylinder has been deactivated, the direct fuel injector injecting fuel to the engine for the first combustion event at an engine speed and a commanded engine torque where the port fuel injector injects fuel and the direct fuel injector does not inject fuel when a combustion event of the cylinder is not the first combustion event. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19, 20)
