1. A method for determining a measure of the concentration of analyte molecules or particles in a fluid sample, comprising:

  • exposing a plurality of capture objects to a solution containing or suspected of containing a first type of analyte molecules or particles, wherein the capture objects comprise a first type of capture object and one or more types of non-targeting capture objects,wherein each of the first type of capture object includes a binding surface having specific binding affinity for the first type of analyte molecule or particle;

    wherein each of the one or more types of non-targeting capture objects do not include any binding surfaces having specific binding affinity for any type of analyte molecules or particles contained in or suspected to be contained in the solution;

    wherein the ratio of the number of first type of capture objects to the total number of capture objects is between 1;

    1.2 and 1;

    100; and

    wherein at least some of the first type of capture objects associate with at least one analyte molecule or particle and at least some of the first type of capture objects do not associate with any analyte molecules or particles;

    spatially separating at least a portion of the plurality of capture objects subjected to the exposing step into a plurality of separate locations;

    addressing at least some of the plurality of locations and determining the number of locations containing a first type of capture object;

    further determining the number of said locations containing a first type of capture object and a first type of analyte molecule or particle; and

    determining a measure of the concentration of the first type of analyte molecules or particles in the fluid sample based at least in part on the ratio of the number of locations containing a first type of capture object and a first type of analyte molecule and particle, to the number of locations containing a first type of capture object.
