Abstract

Provided is a pumping system that includes a parallel dual chamber pumping mechanism and an attachable disposable cassette. The disposable cassette includes a multi-laminate membrane which facilitates efficient, accurate and uniform delivery of fluids. The multi-laminate membrane is held in intimate contact with the pumping fingers of the pumping mechanism by electrostatic or magnetic attraction, thereby allowing the pump to pull a vacuum without the need for a preloaded elastomeric pumping segment.

Claims

1. A disposable cassette for use in a pumping system, the disposable cassette comprising:

(a) a body having a sealed top side, an open bottom side, an inlet port disposed on a proximal end of the cassette and an outlet port disposed on a distal end of the cassette;

(b) a first pumping chamber disposed within the open bottom side between a first inlet valve and a first outlet valve;

(c) a second pumping chamber disposed within the open bottom side between a second inlet valve and a second outlet valve, wherein the first and second pumping chambers are positioned in parallel with each other on opposing sides symmetric to a center axis of the body extending from the inlet port to the outlet port; and

(d) a multi-laminate membrane adhered to and sealing the open bottom side defining fluid paths between the inlet port and the outlet port, wherein the multi-laminate membrane comprises a plurality of layers.

2. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein an inner surface of the first and second pumping chambers is angled in accordance with a range of motion of pumping face plates of a pumping mechanism.

3. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the multi-laminate membrane is a thin film magnetic membrane.

4. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the multi-laminate membrane is magnetically permeable.

The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the thin multi-laminate membrane comprises a first layer configured to adhere to the open bottom side of the body, a second layer configured to be attracted by a magnetic field, and a third layer configured to resist abrasion, wherein the first, second, and third layers are laminated as a single membrane.

6. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the multi-laminate membrane is ultrasonically welded, heat-sealed, or solvent-bonded to the open end of the body.

7. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein each of the first inlet valve, second inlet valve, first outlet valve, and second outlet valve are independently operable.

8. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the inlet port is configured for fluid communication with a fluid reservoir and the outlet port is configured for attachment to downstream supply tubing for intravenous administration of the fluid to a subject.

The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the disposable cassette comprises a first fluid path in fluid communication with the inlet port, the outlet port and the first pumping chamber, and a second fluid path in fluid communication with the inlet port, the outlet port and the second pumping chamber, wherein the first fluid path is parallel and symmetrical to the second fluid path with respect to the axis extending from the inlet port to the outlet port.

The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the first inlet valve, first pumping chamber and first outlet valve are respectively positioned parallel and symmetrical to the second inlet valve, the second outlet valve and the second pumping chamber along the axis extending from the inlet port to the outlet port.

11. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the multi-laminate membrane is non-compliant and contributes to substantially zero spring rate during a pumping cycle.

12. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the multi-laminate membrane is configured to be displaced and supported by drive arms of the pumping system during operation without being stretched or compressed.

13. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the multi-laminate membrane comprises a first layer, a second layer and a third layer, in this order, and the second layer is a magnetically permeable material.

14. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the multi-laminate membrane is configured to be supported by drive arms of the pumping system.

15. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the multi-laminate membrane is configured to be supported by drive arms of the pumping system and contributes to substantially zero spring rate during a pumping cycle.

16. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the first and second pumping chambers have an equal volume.

17. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein each of the first inlet valve, the second inlet valve, the first outlet valve and the second outlet valve are sized and configured for unrestricted fluid flow

18. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein each of the first inlet valve, the second inlet valve, the first outlet valve and the second outlet valve are sized and configured for bubble free priming.

19. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the body is configured to be loaded into the pumping system in a single way for misload protection.

20. The disposable cassette of claim 1, wherein the body is asymmetric for making misload into the pumping system impossible.
