Abstract

A simple battery and battery charger. In one embodiment, the battery charger includes an output terminal that provides a charging voltage Vout and charging current Iout. The battery is contained in a battery pack having an input terminal, which can be connected to the output terminal in order to receive Vout and Iout. The battery charger may include a first circuit for controlling the magnitude of Vout. The battery pack may include a second circuit that generates a control signal when the output terminal is connected to the input terminal. The first circuit is configured to control the magnitude of Vout based on the control signal.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a battery charger comprising a first pair of output terminals, and;

a first battery pack comprising a first battery and first pair of input terminals, which can be connected to the first pair of output terminals;

wherein the battery charger comprises a circuit for controlling a voltage Vout, which is provided at the first pair of output terminals by the battery charger;

wherein the first battery pack comprises a first circuit that generates a first control signal (Vref) when the first pair of output terminals is connected to the first pair of input terminals;

wherein the circuit is configured to control Vout based on the first control signal.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first circuit generates the first control signal in response to processing data representing a voltage Vb across the first battery or in response to processing data representing a voltage across a cell of the first battery.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first circuit comprises a central processing unit (CPU) and a memory that stores instructions executable by the CPU, wherein the CPU generates a digital equivalent of the first control signal in response to executing the instructions.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the instructions are configured for use in a battery pack that contains lithium-ion cells coupled together in series and/or in parallel.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the battery charger and first battery pack are in data communication with each other so that the first circuit can transmit the first control signal to the circuit.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the battery charger further comprises a voltage isolation device coupled to the circuit, wherein the data isolation device transmits the first control signal to the circuit.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first circuit is further configured to monitor a voltage Vb across the first battery, a total charge on the first battery, and/or a temperature associated with the first battery.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the charger further comprises:

a transformer comprising primary and secondary windings;

a transistor coupled to the primary winding;

a diode coupled to the secondary winding;

a capacitor coupled to the diode;

wherein one of the output terminals of the first pair is directly coupled to the capacitor and diode so that no device other than a metal conductor is connected between the one output terminal and the diode or capacitor.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

a plurality of battery packs including the first battery pack;

wherein the battery charger comprises a plurality of pairs of output terminals including the first pair of output terminals;

wherein each of the battery packs includes a battery and a pair of input terminals that can be connected to a respective pair of the output terminals;

wherein the battery charger can concurrently provide Vout at all of the output terminals;

wherein a second battery pack of the plurality, comprises a second circuit for generating a second control signal when a second pair of input terminals of the second battery pack is connected to a second pair of the plurality pairs pair output terminal;

wherein the circuit is configured to control Vout based on the second control signal;

wherein only one of first and second circuits generates the first and second control signals, respectively, at any time when the first and second pairs of input terminals are concurrently connected to the first and second pairs of output terminals, respectively, of the battery charger.

The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first battery comprises first cells that are coupled together in a first configuration, wherein the battery charger is configured to charge a second battery pack via the first pair of output terminals, wherein the second battery pack comprises second cells that are coupled in a second configuration, wherein the first configuration is different when compared to the second configuration.

11. An apparatus comprising:

a rechargeable battery;

a circuit;

a pair of input terminals, wherein one of the input terminals is configured to receive current from a battery charger, wherein a portion of the current can be used to charge the rechargeable battery;

wherein the circuit is configured for generating a control signal for controlling the battery charger;

wherein the circuit generates the control signal based on a voltage across the rechargeable battery or a cell thereof.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising:

the battery charger, wherein the battery charger comprises;

a first pair of output terminals, one of which is configured for outputting the current that is received at the one of the input terminals;

a transformer comprising primary and secondary windings;

a transistor for controlling current flow through the primary winding;

a transistor control circuit for controlling the transistor based on the control signal.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the charger further comprises:

a diode coupled to the secondary winding;

a capacitor coupled to the diode;

wherein the diode is directly connected between the secondary winding and the one of the first pair of output terminals.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the circuit comprises a central processing unit (CPU) and a memory that stores instructions executable by the CPU, wherein the CPU generates a digital equivalent of the control signal in response to executing the instructions

15. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein circuit is further configured to monitor a voltage Vb across the battery, a total charge on the battery, and/or a temperature associated with the battery.

16. A method comprising:

a circuit in a battery pack generating a control signal Vref;

the circuit transmitting the control signal to a battery charger coupled to the battery pack;

the battery charger generating an output voltage Vout for use in charging a battery of the battery pack, wherein the output voltage Vout varies with the control signal Vref.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising:

the circuit receiving a signal representing a voltage across the battery or a cell thereof;

the circuit converting the signal into a digital equivalent;

the circuit comparing the digital equivalent to a predetermined value.

18. The method of claim 17 further comprising:

the circuit receiving a second signal representing current flow through the battery;

the circuit converting the second signal into a second digital equivalent;

the circuit comparing the second digital equivalent to a second predetermined value;

the circuit adjusting the control signal Vref that is transmitted to the battery charger in response to comparing the second digital equivalent to the second predetermined value.

19. The method of claim 16 further comprising:

the circuit receiving a signal representing current flow through the battery;

the circuit converting the signal into a digital equivalent;

the circuit comparing the digital equivalent to a predetermined value;

the circuit adjusting the control signal Vref that is transmitted to the battery charger in response to comparing the digital equivalent to the predetermined value.

20. The method of claim 16 further comprising:

the circuit storing data in a memory, wherein the data represents the number of times the battery has been charged;

the circuit accessing the memory to read the data, wherein the circuit generates the control signal Vref in response to processing the data read from the memory.
