A method for automatically inventorying a purchased thing using an inventory management system in communication with at least one of a manufacturer of the thing, a merchant selling the thing, a credit card company processing the transaction for the thing, or a third-party service, wherein the inventory management system comprises a computer having a processor and a non-transient data storage, comprising the steps of:
- receiving a transaction record at the inventory management system, wherein the transaction record comprises transaction information relating to the purchase of the thing as provided by the merchant;
optionally receiving a thing record at the inventory management system, wherein the thing record comprises generic information relating to the thing purchased as provided by the manufacturer, the merchant, the credit card company, or a third-party service; and
storing, within the non-transient data storage of the inventory management system, the received information from the transaction record and/or thing record, as part of an inventory.
