Abstract

Methods and apparatuses are provided for optimizing a wireless network. A description of a traffic incident is received. An impact area is generated from the description. A geographic polygon is generated based on the impact area. The network usage of the geographic polygon is determined. A message including the network usage for the geographic polygon may be transmitted to a mobile network operator.

Claims

1. A method for optimizing a wireless network, the method comprising:

receiving a first description of a traffic incident;

generating based on the first description, a geographic polygon covering a geographic area affected by the traffic incident;

calculating, based on the first description, an estimated network usage in the geographic polygon as a result of the traffic incident; and

transmitting the estimated network usage to a mobile network operator.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein generating the geographic polygon comprises:

predicting an altered traffic pattern resulting from the traffic incident using current traffic and historical traffic information; and

determining the geographic area where a current traffic pattern is affected by the altered traffic pattern.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the altered traffic pattern comprises increased vehicle congestion.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the geographic area comprises one or more road segments.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein predicting the altered traffic pattern further uses one or more current weather conditions.

6. The method of claim 1,

wherein the map data is transmitted to one or more devices predicted to enter the geographic polygon.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein calculating the estimated network usage comprises:

overlaying the geographic polygon on a cellular map;

identifying one or more cells from an overlap of the geographic polygon and the cellular map;

determining a change in a congestion of the one or more cells based on the altered traffic; and

determining a change in bandwidth for the congestion in the one or more cells.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a second description of the incident, wherein generating the geographic polygon is based on the first description and second description.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein the geographic polygon is a first geographic polygon, the geographic area is a first geographic area, and the estimated network usage is a first estimated network usage, the method further comprising:

generating a second geographic polygon covering a second geographic area affected by the traffic incident;

calculating a second estimated network usage for the second geographic polygon; and

transmitting the second estimated network usage to the mobile network operator.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the first geographic polygon corresponds to a first plurality of cells of a cellular network and the second geographic polygon corresponds to a second plurality of cells of the cellular network.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the traffic incident is a traffic event on a road segment of a roadway network.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the first geographic polygon corresponds to a first plurality of road segments of the roadway network and the second geographic polygon corresponds to a second plurality of road segments of the roadway network.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein the first geographic area and second geographic area are areas that have increased traffic congestion as a result of the traffic incident.

26. The method of claim 1, wherein generating based on the first description, the geographic polygon covering the geographic area affected by the traffic incident comprises:

using the first description, current traffic flow data, and historical flow data to predict an estimated traffic flow pattern as a result of the traffic incident;

determining the geographic area based on where current traffic flow is affected by the estimated traffic flow pattern; and

generating the geographic polygon to cover the geographic area.

27. The method of claim 1, wherein calculating, based on the first description, the estimated network usage in the geographic polygon as a result of the traffic incident comprises:

identifying a historical number of connected devices in the geographic polygon; and

calculating a predicted number of connected devices in the geographic polygon based on an estimated traffic flow pattern.

28. The method of claim 6, wherein the one or more devices include an autonomous vehicle.

29. A system for optimizing a wireless network, the system comprising:

a receiver configured to receive a description of a traffic incident;

a location cloud coupled to the receiver, the location cloud configured to generate based on the description, a geographic polygon covering a geographic area affected by the traffic incident and calculate, based on the description, an estimated network usage in the geographic polygon as a result of the traffic incident; and

a transmitter configured to transmit the estimated network usage to a mobile network operator or a mobile device.

30. The system of claim 29, wherein the location cloud is further configured to generate a task for a connected device expected to enter the geographic polygon and the transmitter is configured to transmit the task.

31. The system of claim 29, wherein the mobile device is an autonomous vehicle or part thereof.
