Abstract

Methods and systems for routing calls include determining location information identifying a location of a caller. A destination for a call from the caller is determined based on the location information and a geographic service area of the destination. The call is routed to the destination.

Claims

1. A method for routing calls, comprising:

determining location information identifying a location of a caller;

determining a destination for a call from the caller based on the location information and a geographic service area of the destination; and

routing the call to the destination.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising validating the location information based on an originating medium of the call.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein validating the location information comprises determining the originating medium of the call and determining a level of location precision that can be associated with the originating medium.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining location information comprises querying a communication service provider that originated the call.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising routing the call to a fallback destination if the location information cannot be determined or if there is no destination that has a geographic service area that includes the location of the caller.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein routing the call to the destination comprises routing call contents and the location information to the destination.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the call is a call for emergency services, wherein the destination is a dispatcher of emergency services, and wherein routing the call to the destination comprises routing the call over an emergency services IP network.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein routing the call further comprises routing the call to a plurality of destinations.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein routing the call to a plurality of destinations comprises routing different subsets of data within the call to different destinations.

10. A method for routing calls, comprising:

determining location information identifying a location of a caller;

determining an emergency service dispatcher for a call for emergency services from the caller based on the location information and a geographic service area of the emergency services dispatcher;

routing the call to a fallback destination if the location information cannot be determined or if there is no emergency services dispatcher that has a geographic service area that includes the location of the caller; and

routing the call to the emergency services dispatcher over an emergency services IP network if the location information can be determined and there is an emergency services dispatcher that has a geographic service area that includes the location of the caller.

11. A call routing system, comprising:

an incoming interface configured to receive a call from a caller through a communication service provider;

an outgoing interface configured to send the call to a network having one or more call destinations;

a location module configured to determine location information identifying a location of the caller;

a routing module comprising a processor configured to determine a destination for the call based on the location information and a geographic service area of the destination and routing the call to the destination using the outgoing interface.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the location module is further configured to validate the location information based on an originating medium of the call.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the location module is further configured to determine the originating medium of the call and to determine a level of location precision that can be associated with the originating medium.

14. The system of claim 11, wherein the location module is further configured to query a communication service provider that originated the call using the incoming interface.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein the routing module is further configured to route the call to a fallback destination if the location information cannot be determined or if there is no destination that has a geographic service area that includes the location of the caller.

16. The system of claim 11, wherein the routing module is further configured to route call contents and the location information to the destination.

17. The system of claim 11, wherein the call is a call for emergency services, wherein the destination is a dispatcher of emergency services, and wherein the routing module is further configured to route the call over an emergency services IP network.

18. The system of claim 11, wherein the incoming interface is configured to receive calls from a plurality of communication service providers and wherein the outgoing interface module is configured to send calls to one or more of a plurality of networks.

19. The system of claim 11, wherein the routing module is further configured to route the call to a plurality of destinations.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the routing module is further configured to route different subsets of data within the call to different destinations.
