Abstract

Systems for tuning a wireless power transfer system are provided, which may include any number of features. In one embodiment, a TET system includes a receive resonator is adapted to be implanted in a human patient and is configured to receive wireless power from a transmit resonator. The system can include a controller configured to identify if a foreign object is interfering with the transmission of power or generating an induced voltage in the receiver resonator. The controller can also be configured to control the transmit resonator to phase match with the foreign object. Methods of use are also provided.

9. A method of operating a wireless power transfer system, said method comprising:

determining an amount of wireless power received by a first transmit resonator from a receive resonator;

comparing the amount of wireless power received by the first transmit resonator to an expected value based on a transmitted wireless power from the first transmit resonator; and

detecting a second transmit resonator when the amount of wireless power received by the first transmit resonator exceeds the expected value.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising transmitting wireless power from the first transmit resonator to the receive resonator.

11. The method of claim 9 further comprising controlling the first transmit resonator to phase match with the second transmit resonator.

12. The method of claim 9 further comprising alerting a user of the presence of the second transmit resonator.

13. The method of claim 9 further comprising halting transmission of wireless power from the first transmit resonator before determining an amount of wireless power received.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising transitioning the first transmit resonator to an inactive state before determining an amount of wireless power received.

15. A wireless power transfer system, comprising:

a first transmit resonator configured to transmit wireless power;

a receive resonator configured to be implanted in a human patient, to receive wireless power from the first transmit resonator and a second transmit resonator, and to reflect an amount of wireless power back to the first transmit resonator;

a controller coupled to the first transmit resonator and configured to;

compare the amount of wireless power received at the first transmit resonator from the receive resonator to an expected value based on a transmitted wireless power from the first transmit resonator; and

detect the presence of the second transmit resonator when the amount of wireless power received by the first transmit resonator exceeds the expected value.

16. The wireless power transfer system of claim 15, wherein the controller is further configured to control the first transmit resonator to phase match with the second transmit resonator upon detection of the presence of the second transmit resonator.

17. The wireless power transfer system of claim 15, wherein the controller is further configured to generate an alert to a user of the wireless power transfer system upon detection of the presence of the second transmit resonator.

18. The wireless power transfer system of claim 15, wherein the controller is further configured to determine the wireless power transfer system is in a transmit state.

19. The wireless power transfer system of claim 15, wherein the controller is further configured to selectively operate the first transmit resonator in either a transmit state or an inactive state.

20. The wireless power transfer system of claim 19, wherein the receive resonator is further configured to:

receive wireless power from the second transmit resonator when the first transmit resonator is in the inactive state; and

reflect the amount of wireless power back to the first transmit resonator due to the second transmit resonator.

21. A method of operating a wireless power transfer system, said method comprising:

determining a first transmit resonator is in an inactive state, the first transmit resonator operable in a first frequency band;

detecting an amount of wireless power received by a receive resonator in the first frequency band; and

detecting an interfering object is present when the amount of wireless power received by the receive resonator in the first frequency band exceeds a threshold.

22. The method of claim 21 further comprising controlling the first transmit resonator to phase match the wireless power received by the receive resonator in the first frequency band from the interfering object.

23. The method of claim 22 further comprising transmitting wireless power from the first transmit resonator to the receive resonator after phase matching with the interfering object.

24. The method of claim 21 further comprising alerting a user of the presence of the interfering object.
