Abstract

An optical modulator apparatus may include a plurality of segment drivers, each segment driver having a unique offset voltage and driving but a portion or a segment of an electro-optical modulator. A modulating electrical signal may be applied to the segment drivers via a plurality of electrical delays. Parameters of the segment drivers may be selected so as to approximate a pre-defined transfer function, which may include a linear or a non-linear transfer function.

26. A modulator apparatus comprising:

a plurality of optical modulator segments sequentially disposed in an optical path of an optical carrier wave and configured to successively modulate the optical carrier wave so as to obtain a modulated optical signal; and

,

a plurality of segment drivers individually coupled to the plurality of modulator segments and configured to drive each of the optical modulator segments synchronously with propagation of the optical carrier wave therein in accordance with a limiting voltage transfer function.

The modulator apparatus of claim 26 wherein each of the plurality of segment drivers is coupled to a different one of the optical modulator segments and is configured to drive that optical modulator segment in accordance with the limiting voltage transfer function that is specific to the segment driver.

The modulator apparatus of claim 26 wherein each of the segment driver is configured to generate a driving voltage V_d in response to a control voltage V_c, wherein the driving voltage V_d transitions between a low voltage V_low and a high voltage V_high when the control voltage V_c passes an offset voltage V_os that is specific to the segment driver.

29. The modulator apparatus of claim 28 wherein each segment driver is configured to generate the driving voltage V_d such that

V_d=V_low when V_c<

V_os−

V_th;

V_d=V_high when V_c>

V_os+V_th; and

V_d varies between V_low and V_high when V_c varies between V_os−

V_th and V_os+V_th, wherein V_th is a threshold voltage defining the width of a voltage transition region about the offset voltage V_os.

30. The modulator apparatus of claim 28 wherein at least two of the segment drivers differ in at least one of V_low, V_high, and V_os.

31. The modulator apparatus of claim 29, wherein each segment driver comprises a limiting amplifier characterized by the corresponding low voltage V_low, the corresponding high voltage V_high, the corresponding offset voltage V_os, and the corresponding threshold voltage V_th.

The modulator apparatus of claim 26 including an electrical input port and one or more electrical delay lines connecting the electrical input port to each segment driver so as to apply a driving voltage V_d to the optical modulator segments synchronously with propagation of the optical carrier wave.

The modulator apparatus of claim 26, further comprising a comparator module operationally coupled to the plurality of segment drivers to provide individual control signals to each of the plurality of segment drivers in response to a control voltage V_c when the control voltage V_c exceeds a threshold set for the corresponding segment driver.

34. The modulator apparatus of claim 26, wherein the plurality of optical modulator segments comprises an optical waveguide and a succession of electrodes disposed along the optical waveguide and operationally coupled thereto.

35. The modulator apparatus of claim 26, wherein the offset voltage V_os of the segment driver of each successive optical modulator segment is greater than the offset voltage V_os of the segment driver of an immediately preceding modulator segment.

36. The modulator apparatus of claim 35, wherein the offset voltage V_os of the segment driver of each successive optical modulator segment is greater than the offset voltage V_os of the segment driver of an immediately preceding modulator segment, if any, by a same step voltage Δ

V_os.

37. The modulator apparatus of claim 34 comprising a silicon photonic chip comprising the optical waveguide.

38. The modulator apparatus of claim 37 wherein the silicon photonic chip comprises the plurality of segment drivers.

39. The modulator apparatus of claim 29 wherein at least one of the low voltage V_low, the high voltage V_high, and a threshold voltage V_th of each segment driver of the plurality of segment drivers are selected to modulate the optical carrier wave in accordance with a non-linear modulation function.

40. The modulator apparatus of claim 39 wherein the non-linear modulation function is one of a quadratic modulation function, a cubic modulation function, a periodic modulation function, and an exponential modulation function.

41. A method of modulating an optical carrier wave by an electrical signal, the method comprising:

a) propagating the optical carrier wave through a succession of optical modulator segments; and

,

b) driving each of the optical modulator segments in accordance with a limiting voltage transfer function synchronized with propagation of the optical wave therein.

42. The method of claim 41 wherein b) comprises driving at least one of the optical modulator segments in accordance with the limiting voltage transfer function that is specific to the segment driver thereof.

43. The method of claim 41 wherein b) comprises generating, for each of the optical modulator segments, a driving voltage V_d in response to a control voltage V_c, wherein the driving voltage V_d transitions between a low voltage V_low and a high voltage V_high when the control voltage V_c passes an offset voltage V_os that is specific to the segment driver.

44. The method of claim 43 wherein b) comprises setting one or more parameters of the limiting voltage transfer function of each of the segment drivers so that an overall electrical to optical modulation transfer function of the succession of the optical modulator segments approximates a pre-defined linear or non-linear function.

45. The method of claim 43, wherein for each of the segment drivers, the limiting voltage transfer function relating the driving voltage V_d and the control voltage V_c, is such that:

V_d=V_low when V_c<

V_os−

V_th;

V_d=V_high when V_c>

V_os+V_th; and

V_d varies between V_low and V_high when V_c varies between V_os−

V_th and V_os+V_th.

46. The method of claim 43, further comprising selecting the offset voltage V_os for each successive optical modulator segment to be greater than the offset voltage V_os for the immediately preceding optical modulator segment.

47. The method of claim 43, further comprising selecting at least one of the low voltage V_low, the high voltage V_high, the offset voltage V_os, and the threshold voltage V_th for each of the optical modulation segments such that V_low of each successive segment driver is substantially equal to V_high of the immediately preceding segment driver.
