Abstract

An apparatus for delivering a bolus of a medical agent to a patient. The apparatus comprises a pump mechanism, a data input device, and a processor in data communication with the keypad and arranged to control the pump mechanism. The processor is programmed to receive data specifying a bolus amount through the data port, receive data regarding duration through the data port, receive a percentage through the data port, the percentage defining a portion of the bolus amount to deliver immediately upon executing a deliver command and a remainder of the bolus amount to deliver over the duration upon executing a deliver command, and execute the deliver command thereby controlling the pump mechanism to deliver the bolus. Also a method of temporarily adjusting the delivery rate of an infusion pump. The infusion pump is programmed to deliver a basal rate. The method comprises prompting a user to select whether to enter the temporary rate as a percent of the current delivery rate or as a new delivery rate; entering into the pump a period of time having a beginning and an end; entering into the pump a temporary basal rate; and delivering the therapeutic agent at a delivery rate substantially equal to the temporary basal rate during the period of time.

2. An ambulatory infusion pump, comprising:

a reservoir configured to contain a medicament;

a pump mechanism configured to deliver the medicament from the reservoir to a patient;

a memory storing a plurality of preset, patient-selectable values relating to a low reservoir reminder, each patient-selectable value relating to an amount of medicament remaining in the reservoir;

a user interactive display; and

a processor configured to control the pump mechanism to deliver the medicament to the patient and communicatively coupled with the memory and the interactive display, the processor further configured to;

receive a selection of one of the preset, patient-selectable values via the user interactive display;

determine that a value relating to an amount of medicament remaining in the reservoir is equal to the selected one of the preset, patient-selectable values; and

issue a low reservoir alert in response to determining that the value relating to the amount of medicament remaining in the reservoir is equal to the selected one of the preset, patient-selectable values.

3. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 2, wherein the processor is further configured to present at least one of the plurality of preset, patient-selectable values relating to the low reservoir reminder on the user interactive display.

4. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 2, wherein the plurality of preset, patient-selectable values define a range of patient-selectable values.

5. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 4, wherein the range of patient-selectable values is between 5 units and 50 units of medicament.

6. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 3, wherein the processor is configured to present at least one of the plurality of preset, patient-selectable values on the user interactive display in response to selection of a low reservoir reminder menu item.

7. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 6, where the processor is configured to present the low reservoir reminder menu item in response to selection of a reminders menu item.

8. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 2, wherein issuing a low reservoir alert includes generating at least one of an auditory signal and a vibratory signal.

9. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 2, wherein the processor is further configured to present a value relating to an amount of medicament remaining in the reservoir on the user interface.

10. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 2, wherein the medicament is insulin.

11. An ambulatory infusion pump, comprising:

a pump mechanism configured to deliver the medicament from a reservoir to a patient;

a user interactive display; and

a processor configured to;

display a low reservoir reminder programming screen on the user interactive display;

receive a selection of one of a plurality of preset, patient-selectable values for a low reservoir reminder via the low reservoir reminder screen;

determine that a value relating to an amount of medicament remaining in the reservoir is equal to the selected one of the preset, patient-selectable values; and

issue a low reservoir alert in response to determining that the value relating to the amount of medicament remaining in the reservoir is equal to the selected one of the preset, patient-selectable values.

12. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to present at least one of the plurality of preset, patient-selectable values for the low reservoir alert on the low reservoir reminder programming screen.

13. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 11, wherein the plurality of preset, patient-selectable values define a range of patient-selectable values.

14. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 13, wherein the range of patient-selectable values is between 5 units and 50 units of medicament.

15. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 12, wherein the processor is configured to present the plurality of preset, patient-selectable values on the low reservoir reminder programming screen in response to selection of a low reservoir reminder menu item.

16. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 15, where the processor is configured to present the low reservoir reminder menu item in response to selection of a reminders menu item.

17. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 11, wherein issuing a low reservoir alert includes generating at least one of an auditory signal and a vibratory signal.

18. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to present a value relating to an amount of medicament remaining in the reservoir on the user interface.

19. The ambulatory infusion pump of claim 11, wherein the medicament is insulin.
