Abstract

A magnetometer containing a crystal sensor with solid-state defects senses the magnitude and direction of a magnetic field. The solid-state defects in the crystal sensor absorb microwave and optical energy to transition between several energy states while emitting light intensity indicative of their spin states. The magnetic field alters the spin-state transitions of the solid-state defects by amounts depending on the solid-state defects'"'"' orientations with respect to the magnetic field. The optical read out, reporting the spin state of an ensemble of solid-state defects from one particular orientation class, can be used to lock microwave signals to the resonances associated with the spin-state transitions. The frequencies of the locked microwave signals can be used to reconstruct the magnetic field vector.

Claims

1. A method of measuring a magnetic field with a solid-state host disposed within the magnetic field, the solid-state host comprising a first ensemble of color centers oriented along a first crystal axis of the solid-state host, the first ensemble of color centers exhibiting a first resonance in a presence of the magnetic field, the method comprising:

frequency-locking a first microwave signal to the first resonance; and

determining an amplitude and/or direction of the magnetic field based on a frequency of the first microwave signal.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein frequency-locking the first microwave signal to the first resonance comprises shifting the frequency of the first microwave signal in response to a change in the magnetic field.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first resonance represents a first energy-level transition.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the first energy-level transition is a first hyperfine transition.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the amplitude and/or direction of the magnetic field comprises determining the amplitude of the magnetic field with a dynamic range of about 360 μ

T to about 100,000 μ

T.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first ensemble of color centers exhibits a second resonance in a presence of the magnetic field, and further comprising:

frequency-locking a second microwave signal to the second resonance, and

wherein determining the amplitude and/or direction of the magnetic field is based on a frequency of the second microwave signal.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the second resonance represents a second energy-level transition different than the first energy-level transition.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein determining the amplitude and/or direction of the magnetic field comprises taking a difference between the frequency of the first microwave signal and the frequency of the second microwave signal.

The method of claim 1, wherein the solid-state host comprises a second ensemble of color centers oriented along a second crystal axis of the solid-state host and exhibiting a second resonance and a third ensemble of color centers oriented along a third crystal axis of the solid-state host and exhibiting a third resonance in the presence of the magnetic field, and further comprising:

frequency-locking a second microwave signal to the second resonance; and

frequency-locking a third microwave signal to the third resonance.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein determining the amplitude and/or direction of the magnetic field is further based on a frequency of the second microwave signal and a frequency of the third microwave signal.

11. A system for measuring a magnetic field, the system comprising:

a solid-state host comprising a first ensemble of color centers oriented along a first crystal axis of the solid-state host, the first ensemble of color centers exhibiting a first resonance in a presence of the magnetic field;

a microwave signal generator, in electromagnetic communication with the solid-state host, to drive the first ensemble of color centers with a first microwave signal;

a photodetector, in optical communication with the solid-state host, to detect a first fluorescence signal emitted by the first ensemble of color centers, the first fluorescence signal representing the first resonance;

circuitry, operably coupled to the microwave signal generator and the photodetector, to frequency-lock the first microwave signal to the first resonance based on the first fluorescence signal; and

a processor, operably coupled to the lock-in amplifier, to determining an amplitude and/or direction of the magnetic field based on a frequency of the first microwave signal.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the circuitry is configured to shift the frequency of the first microwave signal in response to a change in the magnetic field.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the first resonance represents a first energy-level transition.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the first energy-level transition is a first hyperfine transition.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor is configured to determine the amplitude and/or direction of the magnetic field with a dynamic range of about 360 μ

T to about 100,000 μ

T.

The system of claim 11, wherein the first ensemble of color centers exhibits a second resonance in a presence of the magnetic field, the circuitry is configured to frequency-lock a second microwave signal to the second resonance, and the processor is configured to determine the amplitude and/or direction of the magnetic field based on a frequency of the second microwave signal.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the second resonance represents a second energy-level transition different than the first energy-level transition.

18. The system of claim 16, wherein the processor is configured to determine the amplitude and/or direction of the magnetic field comprises by taking a difference between the frequency of the first microwave signal and the frequency of the second microwave signal.

The system of claim 11, wherein the solid-state host comprises a second ensemble of color centers oriented along a second crystal axis of the solid-state host and exhibiting a second resonance and a third ensemble of color centers oriented along a third crystal axis of the solid-state host and exhibiting a third resonance in the presence of the magnetic field and wherein the circuitry is configured to frequency-lock a second microwave signal to the second resonance and to frequency-lock a third microwave signal to the third resonance.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the processor is configured to determine the amplitude and/or direction of the magnetic field based on a frequency of the second microwave signal and a frequency of the third microwave signal.
