First Claim
1. A system to detect unauthorized removal of a mobile processor-based device from a designated area, the system comprising:
- an anti-theft beacon system disposed proximate an exit of the designated area, the anti-theft beacon system comprising;
a radio frequency (RF) transmitter which broadcasts RF beacon signals;
a mobile processor-based device, comprising;
a beacon network interface which includes an RF receiver;
at least one nontransitory processor-readable storage medium that stores at least one of processor-executable instructions or data; and
at least one processor communicably coupled to the at least one nontransitory processor-readable storage medium and communicatively coupled to the beacon network interface, in operation the at least one processor;
receives, via the RF receiver of the beacon network interface, the RF beacon signals from the RF transmitter of the anti-theft beacon system;
determines, by the at least one processor, at least one signal characteristic of the received RF beacon signals;
determines that the mobile processor-based device has been removed from the designated area based at least in part on the determined at least one signal characteristic; and
performs at least one anti-theft action based at least in part on the determination that the mobile processor-based device has been removed from the designated area.

Abstract
Systems and methods for preventing the unauthorized removal of mobile processor-based devices from designated areas (e.g., inside of a shopping area). The system may utilize a beacon technology based on a low energy protocol to prevent unauthorized removal of the devices. An anti-theft beacon system which includes an RF beacon transmitter may be positioned proximate an exit of a designated area. Mobile processor-based devices detect beacon signals from the anti-theft beacon system. Responsive to such detection, a device determines that it has been removed from the designated area. The device may then perform one or more anti-theft actions, including operating as a beacon once removed from the designated area. An auxiliary power source may power a beacon of the mobile processor-based device when the mobile processor-based device has been removed from the designated area so that the beacon may still broadcast signals even when a primary power source is disabled.

21. A method of operation of an anti-theft beacon system to detect unauthorized removal of a mobile processor-based device from a designated area, the method comprising:
