Abstract
A medical communication protocol translator can be configured to facilitate communication between medical devices that are programmed to communicate with different protocol formats. The medical communication protocol translator can receive an input message formatted according to a first protocol format from a first medical device and to output an output message formatted according to a second protocol format supported by a second medical device using a set of translation rules. For example, a medical communication protocol translator can receive an input message from a hospital information system formatted according to a first HL7 protocol format and output an output message formatted according to a second HL7 protocol format based on a comparison with the set of translation rules.

2. A method of reducing nuisance alarms for a physiological parameter by determining an alarm threshold optimized for a specific care unit, the care unit including a plurality of patients being monitored for the physiological parameter, the method comprising:

in the care unit, electronically measuring patient specific physiological parameters for the plurality of patients using a plurality of patient monitors; electronically providing the patient specific physiological parameters to a threshold recommendation system; receiving at least one recommended parameter specific alarm threshold value, said value responsive to a number of alarms triggered by said patient specific physiological parameters at said at least one recommended parameter specific alarm threshold value; said at least one recommended parameter specific alarm threshold value calculated to reduce said number of alarms at said care center for said parameter by determining how many alarms are generated for each of a range of threshold values and choosing a threshold value from the range of threshold values that reduces a number of alarms; and programming at least one of said plurality of patient monitors with a threshold value incorporating information gained by said suggested threshold value. - View Dependent Claims (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)

A method of determining an alarm threshold optimized for a specific patient care unit, the alarm threshold selected to reduce nuisance alarms for a physiological parameter in the care unit, the care unit including a plurality of patients being monitored for the physiological parameter, the method comprising:

accessing measurements of patient physiological parameters across the plurality of patients using a plurality of monitoring devices in the patient care unit; using the measurements, determining a first number of alarms that would have been triggered at a first parameter alarm threshold; using the measurements, determining a second number of alarms that would have been triggered at a second parameter alarm threshold different from the first threshold; selecting one of the first and second alarm thresholds that if applied would reduce alarm activations; and recommending, to the patient care unit, use of a care unit specific alarm threshold responsive to the selected one of the first and second alarm thresholds. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27)
