Abstract

A heat transfer system is disclosed that includes a circulation loop of a heat transfer fluid that comprises a halocarbon. The circulation loop includes a compressor or pump that includes bearing rolling surfaces in contact with the heat transfer fluid. The bearing contact surface has a substrate a layer thereon that includes a polymer or oligomer having polar side groups and a tribofilm.

Claims

1. A heat transfer system comprising a circulation loop of a halocarbon heat transfer fluid, the circulation loop including a compressor or pump that includes bearing contact surfaces lubricated by the heat transfer fluid, said bearing contact surface comprising a metal substrate having thereon a layer comprising an oligomer comprising polar side groups or a polymer comprising polar side groups, and a tribofilm.

2. The heat transfer system of claim 1, wherein the heat transfer fluid comprises less than 0.008 wt. % of lubricant oils selected from polyol esters, polyalkylene glycols, polyvinyl ethers, polyalpha olefins, alkylbenzenes, or mineral acids, based on the total weight of the heat transfer fluid.

The heat transfer system of claim 1, wherein the heat transfer fluid comprises from 0.008 wt. % to 0.5 wt. % of lubricant oils selected from polyol esters, polyalkylene glycols, polyvinyl ethers, polyalpha olefins, alkylbenzenes, or mineral acids, based on the total weight of the heat transfer fluid.

The heat transfer system of claim 1, wherein the heat transfer fluid comprises from 0.1 wt. % to 3.0 wt. % of lubricant oils selected from polyol esters, polyalkylene glycols, polyvinyl ethers, polyalpha olefins, alkylbenzenes, or mineral acids, based on the total weight of the heat transfer fluid.

5. The heat transfer system of claim 1, wherein polar side groups comprise nitrogen or oxygen atoms.

6. The heat transfer system of claim 5, wherein the polar side groups are selected from carboxylate, ester, aldehyde or ketone carbonyl, alcohol, nitrile, amine, amide, imide, or imidazole groups.

The heat transfer system of claim 1, wherein the oligomer or polymer is selected from polyaryl ether ketones including polyether ether ketones, branched polyethylenimines, polyvinyl pyridines, polyvinyl pyrrolidones, polycarbonates, polyacrylates including polyalkyl acrylates, polyalkyl and alkylacrylates, polyacrylamides, polyacrylic acids, polyacrylonitriles, or polyvinyl imidazoles.

8. The heat transfer system of claim 1, wherein the oligomer contains from 2 to 100 repeat units and the polymer contains from 101 to 1000 repeat units.

9. The heat transfer system of claim 1, wherein the oligomer or polymer comprising polar side groups is present in the heat transfer fluid in an amount of from 0.01 wt. % to 1 wt. %, based on based on the total weight of the heat transfer fluid.

10. The heat transfer system of claim 1, wherein the layer on the metal substrate comprises the polymer comprising polar side groups.

11. The heat transfer system of claim 1, wherein the layer on the metal substrate comprises the oligomer comprising polar side groups.

12. The heat transfer system of claim 1 wherein the halocarbon comprises fluoro substituents.

13. The heat transfer system of claim 12 wherein the halocarbon comprises fluoro and chloro substituents.

14. The heat transfer system of claim 1, wherein the halocarbon is a halogenated olefin.

15. The heat transfer system of claim 9, wherein the halogenated olefin is halogenated propene.

16. The heat transfer system of claim 12, wherein the halocarbon comprises a 1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene (E-HFO-1233zd or R1233zd(E)), 2-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene, 3,3,3-trifluoropropene (HFO-1234zf), Z-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (Z—

HFO-1234ze), 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234yf), E-1,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropene (E-HFO-1255ye), or Z-1,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropene (Z—

HFO-125ye).

17. The heat transfer system of claim 1, wherein the heat transfer fluid further comprises one or more additives selected from antioxidants, corrosion inhibitors, oxidation inhibitors, acid scavengers, dispersants, detergents, metal deactivators, boundary additives.

18. The heat transfer system of claim 16, wherein the additive includes a vapor phase corrosion inhibitor comprising a carbonate, carboxylate (benzoate, caprylate, and salicylate), nitrate, nitrite, chromic, or molybdate salt of an amine.

The heat transfer system of claim 1, that is a vapor compression heat transfer system comprising a compressor that includes said bearing contact surface, a heat rejection heat exchanger, an expansion device, and a heat absorption heat exchanger, connected together by conduits to form said circulation loop.

20. The heat transfer system of claim 1, wherein the bearing contact surfaces comprises ceramic rolling elements and a high nitrogen CrMo martensitic steel ring.
