Abstract

Mitigating radiation induced injury to a mammal that has been exposed to radiation by administering a pharmaceutically effective amount of a composition comprising at least one CXCR4 antagonist to the mammal.

Claims

1. A method of mitigating radiation induced injury to a mammal that has been exposed to an external source of radiation, comprising the steps of:

(a) identifying a mammal that has been exposed to an external source of radiation,

(b) ascertaining a time of exposure to the external source of radiation, and thereafter

(c) knowingly delaying administration of a pharmaceutically effective amount of a composition comprising at least one CXCR4 antagonist to the mammal for a delay period sufficient to cause administration to commence at least 48 hours after time of exposure.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the delay period is sufficient to cause administration to commence at least 72 hours after time of exposure.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the delay period is sufficient to cause administration to commence at least one week after time of exposure.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the delay period is sufficient to cause administration to commence between 48 hours and one week after time of exposure.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the mammal is a human.

6. The method of any one of claims 1-5 wherein the CXCR4 antagonist is genistein.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the CXCR4 antagonist is coadministered with a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the method mitigates radiation induced injury to tissue.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the method mitigates radiation induced injury to organ tissue.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the method mitigates radiation induced injury to skin.
