Abstract

An alarm notification system can enable a clinician to respond to an alarm notification received via a computing device, which may have more advanced functionality than a pager. The clinician'"'"'s device can include a notification client which can respond to alarm notifications. The notification client can also provide one or more user interfaces that enable the clinician to view information about an alarm, such as information about a patient'"'"'s status, physiological parameter values, trend data, audio/video of the patient, combinations of the same, or the like. Further, the notification client can provide functionality for a clinician to respond to an alarm, annotate an alarm, and/or indicate that the clinician can or cannot respond to the alarm, among other features. In addition, the clinician device can also (or instead) include an admit module that provides for automatic association of a patient to a device or location.

Claims

1. A method of managing alarm notifications, the method comprising:

under control of a computer system comprising physical computer hardware;

receiving an alarm from a patient device, the alarm comprising information about a physiological parameter status of a patient;

transmitting an alarm notification to a clinician device in response to receiving the alarm;

determining whether an escalation condition is present, the escalation condition depending on one or both of (1) whether a response from the clinician device regarding the alarm notification has been received and (2) content of any response received from the clinician device; and

in response to the escalation condition being present, automatically escalating the alarm by sending the alarm notification to a second clinician device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the escalation condition comprises no response being received from the clinician device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the escalation condition comprises an indication from the clinician device that the alarm notification has not been accessed by the clinician.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the escalation condition comprises not receiving an indication from the clinician device that the alarm notification has been accessed by the clinician.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the content of the response received from the clinician device comprises an indication that a clinician user of the clinician device is unable to respond to the alarm.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the content of the response received from the clinician device comprises an indication that a clinician user of the clinician device has marked the alarm notification as unread.

7. A system for managing alarm notifications, the system comprising:

an alarm notification component comprising physical computer hardware configured to;

receive an alarm notification regarding an alarm at a patient device;

electronically generate a user interface configured to output an indication of the alarm notification to a clinician and a user interface control selectable by the clinician to respond to the alarm notification; and

transmit a response to the alarm notification so as to enable escalation if the response indicates an inability to handle the alarm.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the alarm notification component is implemented in a mobile device.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the mobile device is restricted to a kiosk mode.

10. The system of claim 7, wherein the response indicates that the clinician has not viewed the alarm notification.

11. The system of claim 7, wherein the response indicates that the clinician has marked the alarm notification as unread.

12. The system of claim 7, wherein the response indicates that the clinician has marked the alarm notification as no longer actionable.

13. The system of claim 7, wherein the alarm notification component is further configured to access trend data associated with a physiological parameter that is a subject of the alarm and output the trend data for presentation to the clinician.

14. The system of claim 7, wherein the alarm notification component is further configured to access video associated with the patient and output the video for presentation to the clinician.

15. The system of claim 7, wherein the alarm notification component is further configured to receive an escalation or re-escalation of the alarm notification.

16. The system of claim 7, wherein the alarm notification component is further configured to output an indication of whether the alarm has been cleared.

17. The system of claim 7, further comprising an admit component configured to provide functionality configured to:

receive a first scan of a first tag associated with the patient;

receive a second scan of a second tag associated with the patient device or a patient location; and

associate a first identifier of the first tag with a second identifier of the second tag.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein one or both of the first and second tags comprise machine-readable codes or radio-frequency identifier (RFID) tags.

19. The system of claim 17, wherein the admit component is further configured to transmit the first and second identifiers to an electronic medical records (EMR) system.

20. The system of claim 17, wherein the location comprises one or more of the following:

a room, a bed, and a bassinet.
