b. heating the at least one polylactone product under thermolysis conditions to produce at least one organic acid product.

Abstract
The present invention is directed to reactor systems and processes for producing organic acids through thermolysis of polylactones. In preferred embodiments, the reactor systems and processes are capable of introducing at least one epoxide reagent and carbon monoxide reagent to at least one reaction vessel through at least one feed stream inlet; contacting the at least one epoxide reagent and carbon monoxide reagent with at least one carbonylation catalyst to produce at least one beta-lactone intermediate; polymerizing the at least one beta-lactone intermediate with at least one initiator in the presence of a metal cation to produce at least one polylactone product; and heating the at least one polylactone product under thermolysis conditions to produce at least one organic acid product. Advantageously, the processes of the present invention may control the presence of contaminates, impurities, catalytic materials, and/or reagents to provide for highly pure organic acid products.

13. A reactor system for producing at least one organic acid product comprising:

a. at least one reaction vessel defining a thermolysis chamber sized and shaped to define an interior volume and a retaining volume within a lower portion of said interior volume wherein said retaining volume is suitable to retain at least one polylactone product in a liquid or semiliquid state; b. at least one feed stream inlet defined by said at least one reaction vessel and adapted for feeding the at least one polylactone product into said thermolysis chamber; c. at least one heater adapted to supply heat to a liquid or semiliquid retained in the at least one reaction vessel; d. a separation chamber defined by said at least one reaction vessel and positioned above and in direct communication with said thermolysis chamber; and e. at least one product outlet defined by said at least one reaction vessel and in direct communication with said separation chamber suitable for withdrawing a product stream comprising at least one organic acid products.

18. A reactor system for producing at least one organic acid product comprising:
