Abstract

An apparatus configured to apply electromagnetic energy to an object may include an energy application zone adapted to receive at least a portion of an object and a source configured to supply RF energy to the energy application zone. The apparatus may also include at least one processor configured to: cause the source to supply RF energy to the energy application zone; determine a value indicative of a rate of energy absorption by a load, including at least a portion of the object, during a first period of time; and determine, based on the value indicative of the rate of energy absorption by the load, an estimated amount of time to obtain a desired characteristic in at least a portion of the object.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

supplying electromagnetic energy to an object in an energy application zone;

determining a value indicative of a rate of energy absorption by a load during a first period of time that the electromagnetic energy is supplied to the object; and

determining, based on the value indicative of the rate of energy absorption by the load, an estimated amount of time to obtain a desired characteristic in the object.

2. The method of claim 1, further including discontinuing the supplying of electromagnetic energy to the object in the energy application zone once the estimated amount of time has elapsed.

3. The method of claim 1, further including displaying the estimated amount of time to the user.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the estimated amount of time includes dividing a value indicative of a total amount of energy to deliver to the load by the value indicative of the rate of energy absorption by the load.

The method of claim 1, wherein the desired characteristic includes a predetermined temperature of the object, and determining the estimated amount of time includes determining an amount of energy needed to achieve the predetermined temperature of the object and dividing the amount of energy by the value indicative of the rate of energy absorption by the load.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein determining the amount of energy needed to achieve the predetermined temperature of the object is based at least on an initial temperature associated with the object, a mass associated with the object, and an energy transfer coefficient associated with the object.

The method of claim 1, wherein the desired characteristic includes a predetermined level of resiliency of the object, and determining the estimated amount of time includes determining an amount of energy needed to achieve the predetermined level of resiliency of the object and dividing the determined amount of energy by the value indicative of the rate of energy absorption by the load.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein determining the amount of energy needed to achieve the predetermined level of resiliency of the object is based at least on a mass associated with the object and an energy transfer coefficient associated with the object.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the estimated amount of time includes:

determining an amount of energy needed to raise a temperature of the object to a predetermined level and dividing the amount of energy by the value indicative of the rate of energy absorption by the load to obtain a temperature rise time; and

adding to the temperature rise time another length of time during which the temperature of the object is to be maintained at the predetermined level.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the object contributes to at least a portion of the load.

11. An apparatus, for supplying RF energy to an object in an energy application zone via a source, the apparatus comprising:

at least one processor configured to;

receive from a user input relating to a desired cooking time;

cause the source to supply RF energy to the energy application zone;

determine a value indicative of a rate of energy absorption by a load, including at least a portion of the object, during a first period of time;

determine, based on the value indicative of the rate of energy absorption by the load, an estimated amount of time to obtain a desired characteristic in at least a portion of the object;

carry out a comparison between the desired cooking time and the estimated amount of time; and

operate the apparatus in accordance with the results of the comparison.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to:

cause application of RF energy to the energy application zone if the desired cooking time is longer than the estimated amount of time; and

issue an alert to the user if the desired cooking time is shorter than the estimated amount of time.

The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the at least one processor is configured to cause application of the RF energy to the energy application zone in accordance with a cooking mode including one or more cooking periods and one or more waiting periods, during which energy supply to the energy application zone is diminished.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein a sum of the one or more cooking periods and the one or more waiting periods approximately equals the desired cooking time.

15. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the at least one processor is configured to cause application of the RF energy to the energy application zone in accordance with a cooking mode including a reduced-power mode.

16. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising an energy application zone adapted to receive at least a portion of the object.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising a source configured to supply RF energy to the energy application zone.

18. A method comprising:

receiving an input of a desired cooking time;

supplying electromagnetic energy to an object in an energy application zone;

determining a value indicative of a rate of energy absorption by a load during a first period of time that the electromagnetic energy is supplied to the object;

determining, based on the value indicative of the rate of energy absorption by the load, an estimated amount of time to obtain a desired characteristic in the object;

comparing the desired cooking time with the estimated amount of time; and

operating the device in accordance with the results of the comparing.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising indicating to a user the estimated amount of time.

20. The method of claim 18, further comprising determining whether the desired cooking time is longer than the estimated amount of time, and

if yes, performing cooking based on a selected cooking mode, and

if no, outputting an alert to the user indicating that the desired cooking time is too short to obtain the desired characteristic.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the selected cooking mode including one or more cooking periods and one or more waiting periods.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein a sum of the one or more cooking periods and the one or more waiting periods approximately equals the desired cooking time.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the selected cooking mode includes a reduced-power mode.
