Abstract

A method for identifier management for user devices operating in an inactive mode includes receiving a first uplink transmission including a user device identifier associated with a user device, transmitting a first downlink transmission including an indication of an ephemeral identifier assigned to the user device, transmitting a second downlink transmission including data associated with the ephemeral identifier, and discarding the ephemeral identifier.

Claims

1. A method for communication in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

receiving, by an anchor node in the wireless communication system, data from a serving node in the wireless communication system, the data including;

an identifier (UE ID) of a user equipment (UE) that transmitted the data to the serving node, an identifier of a session (session ID) associated with the UE, and cryptographically encoded user data;

determining, by the anchor node, a UE context associated with the UE ID, the UE context comprising a session context associated with the session ID;

decrypting and validating the cryptographically encoded user data, by the anchor node, in accordance with cryptographic keying material referenced by the session context; and

transmitting, by the anchor node, the user data to a core network component in the wireless communication system referenced by the session context.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the session context comprises at least one of:

a data radio bearer identifier (DRB ID);

a logical channel identifier (LCID);

a DRB configuration;

a logical channel configuration;

a cryptographic key;

a cryptographic counter;

a radio resource control configuration parameter associated with the UE; and

a protocol data unit (PDU) sequence number.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the session ID is one of:

an LCID;

or

a DRB ID.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising the anchor node transmitting, to the UE, via the serving node, an acknowledgement of reception of the data by the anchor node.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the acknowledgement of reception is cryptographically protected in accordance with cryptographic keying material referenced by the session context.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the cryptographically encoded user data is conveyed in a packet data convergence protocol data unit.

7. The method of claim 4, wherein the acknowledgement of reception is conveyed in a packet data convergence protocol data unit.

8. An anchor node in a wireless communication system, the anchor node comprising:

a receiver configured to receive data from a serving node in the wireless communication system, the data including;

an identifier (UE ID) of a user equipment (UE) that transmitted the data to the serving node, an identifier of a session (session ID) associated with the UE, and cryptographically encoded user data;

a processor configured to retrieve UE context associated with the UE ID, the UE context comprising a session context associated with the session ID, and to decrypt and validate the cryptographically encoded user data in accordance with cryptographic keying material referenced by the session context; and

a transmitter configured to transmit the user data to a core network component in the wireless communication system referenced by the session context.

9. The anchor node of claim 8, wherein the session context comprises at least one of:

a data radio bearer identifier (DRB ID);

a logical channel identifier (LCID);

a DRB configuration;

a logical channel configuration;

a cryptographic key;

a cryptographic counter;

a radio resource control configuration parameter associated with the UE; and

a protocol data unit (PDU) sequence number.

10. The anchor node of claim 8, wherein the session ID is one of:

an LCID;

or

a DRB ID.

11. The anchor node of claim 8, wherein the anchor node transmits, to the UE, via the serving node, an acknowledgement of reception of the data.

12. The anchor node of claim 11, wherein the acknowledgement of reception is cryptographically protected in accordance with cryptographic keying material referenced by the session context.

13. The anchor node of claim 8, wherein the cryptographically encoded user data is conveyed in a packet data convergence protocol data unit.

14. The anchor node of claim 11, wherein the acknowledgement of reception is conveyed in a packet data convergence protocol data unit.

15. A method for communication in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

receiving by a serving node in the wireless communication system, from a user equipment (UE), a UE identifier (UE ID) and a protocol data unit (PDU), the PDU comprising one or more of;

a user data segment, a segment offset, a first segment indication, a last segment indication, a sequence number, a session identifier (session ID), and a reception status request indicator;

constructing, by the serving node, a user data packet based on one or more of;

the user data segment, the segment offset, the first segment indication, the last segment indication, the sequence number, and the session ID;

transmitting, by the serving node, a reception status indication to the UE according to the reception status request indicator;

determining, by the serving node, the identity of an anchor node in the wireless communication system associated with the UE ID; and

transmitting, by the serving node, the UE ID, the session ID and the user data packet to the anchor node.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the session ID is one of:

a logical channel identifier;

or

a data radio bearer identifier.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

receiving, by the serving node, from the anchor node, an acknowledgement message indicating that the anchor node received the data; and

transmitting, by the serving node, the acknowledgement message to the UE.

18. A serving node in a wireless communication system, the serving node comprising:

a receiver configured to receive data from a user equipment (UE) in the wireless communication system, the data including a UE identifier (UE ID) and a protocol data unit (PDU), the PDU comprising one or more of;

a user data segment, a segment offset, a first segment indication, a last segment indication, a sequence number, a session identifier (session ID), and a reception status request indicator;

a processor configured to determine the identity of an anchor node in the wireless communication system associated with the UE ID and to construct a user data packet based on one or more of;

the user data segment, the segment offset, the first segment indication, the last segment indication, the sequence number, and the session ID; and

a transmitter configured to transmit the UE ID, the session ID and the user data packet to the anchor node.

19. The serving node of claim 18, further comprising:

a second receiver configured to receive an acknowledgement message from the anchor node; and

a second transmitter configured to transmit the acknowledgement message to the UE.
