Abstract

An emergency escape system is provided. The system comprises a quick release safety pin, a manual release box configured with a metal jacket that contains the pin, and a swing arm attached via a rod to a locking mechanism, the swing arm held immobile by the pin. Upon release of the pin, the arm is configured to move in a horizontal direction and cause the rod to pull and release the locking mechanism from an engaged position. The locking mechanism, when in engaged position, securely maintains at least one of a window, a door, and a panel. The safety pin, the metal jacket, and the swing arm are positioned on an outward facing surface of the manual release box. A load spring surrounding the rod is manipulated by action of the swing arm and causes release of the locking mechanism.

Claims

1. An emergency escape system, comprising:

a quick release safety pin;

a manual release box configured with a metal jacket that contains the safety pin; and

a swing arm attached via a rod to a locking mechanism, the swing arm held immobile by the safety pin,

wherein upon release of the safety pin, the swing arm is configured to move in a horizontal direction and cause the rod to pull and release the locking mechanism from an engaged position.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the locking mechanism, when in engaged position, is configured to securely maintain at least one of a window, a door, and a panel.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the safety pin, the metal jacket, and the swing arm are positioned on an outward facing surface of the manual release box.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the manual release box with attached quick release safety pin, metal jacket, and swing arm are configured to be positioned about 42 inches above floor level.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the quick release safety pin is held in non-released position in the metal jacket by at least two ball bearings.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein release of the quick release safety pin is configured to cause the ball bearings to retract inside cavities of the quick release safety pin.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the swing arm comprises a hinge attached by bolts to a surface of the manual release box.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein a load spring surrounding the rod is manipulated by action of the swing arm and causes release of the locking mechanism.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of a smoke detector and a siren are configured to contribute to release of the locking mechanism.

10. A method of releasing a locking mechanism, comprising:

a shaft component of a quick release safety pin receiving pressure;

the quick release safety pin, based on the shaft component receiving the pressure, causing release of a swing arm from a secure position; and

the swing arm, based on sideways movement enabled by release from the secure position, causing an attached rod to release a locking mechanism,

wherein the locking mechanism, when in an unreleased state, maintains at least one of a panel, a window, and a door in a closed state.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the quick release safety pin is held in non-released position in a metal jacket by at least two ball bearings.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the quick release safety pin and the swing arm are positioned on an outer surface of a manual release box.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein a load spring surrounding the rod is manipulated by action of the swing arm and causes release of the locking mechanism.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the manual release box with attached quick release safety pin and swing arm are configured to be typically positioned about 42 inches above floor level.

15. A quick release safety pin, comprising:

a shaft;

a spring encircling an upper end of the shaft; and

a jacket into which a lower end of the shaft protrudes,

wherein downward pressure on the upper end of the shaft against resistance of the spring releases a swing arm, and

wherein movement of the swing arm enables a locking mechanism to release.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the shaft, the spring, the jacket, and the swing arm are positioned on an outer surface of a manual release box.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the locking mechanism, when in engaged position, is configured to securely maintain at least one of a window, a door, and a panel.

18. The system of claim 16, wherein the swing arm is attached, inside the manual release box, to a rod connected to the locking mechanism.

19. The system of claim 16, wherein the manual release box with attached quick release safety pin, jacket, and swing arm are configured to be positioned about 42 inches above floor level.

20. The system of claim 15, wherein the quick release safety pin, prior to receipt of downward pressure, is held in the metal jacket by at least two ball bearings.
