Abstract

A digital license plate with an associated payment and information handling system is described. The payment system allows for automated payment for parking that includes sending authorization to pay parking related payments to a payment authority, with authorization at least partially incorporating information stored in the digital license plate.

Claims

1. A vehicle parking payment system, comprising:

a digital license plate attachable to a vehicle, the digital license plate having a display, and being connectable to send and receive data;

wherein the data is sendable to at least one of a parking related facility, meter, and fine system, and further

wherein data is sendable to a payment authority.

2. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the digital license plate is connectable to a user device to receive and send data.

3. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the digital license plate is connectable to a user device to receive and send data, and wherein the user device sends payment data to the payment authority in response to data received from the digital license plate.

4. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the digital license plate receives data from a connected user device related to parking.

5. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the display of a digital license plate provides parking related information.

6. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the display of a digital license plate provides parking related information in response to communication from a designated official.

7. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the display of a digital license plate provides parking related information in response to communication from a designated official selected to be at least one of a law enforcement, police, meter reader, and emergency responder.

8. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the display of a digital license plate presents electronically readable information.

9. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the display of a digital license plate presents electronically readable bar codes.

10. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the display of a digital license plate presents electronically readable QR codes.

11. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the display of a digital license plate presents visually recognizable parking sticker or tag.

12. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the display of a digital license plate further presents visually recognizable advertising.

13. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the display of a digital license plate is a bistable display.

14. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the digital license plate has or is connectable to a GNSS system to assist in determining parking related position information.

15. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the digital license plate has or is connectable to an accelerometer to assist in determining parking status information.

16. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the digital license plate can provide a succession of automatic payments to extend allowed parking time.

17. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the digital license plate locally provides parking related information to a user device.

18. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the digital license plate remotely provides parking related information to a user device.

19. The vehicle parking payment system of claim 1, wherein the digital license plate remotely provides information related to change in parking status to a user device.

20. A vehicle parking payment method, comprising the steps of:

determining when a vehicle has parked;

allowing a digital license plate having a display and attached to a vehicle to wirelessly search for at least one of a parking related facility, meter, and fine system,

sending authorization to pay parking related payments to a payment authority, with authorization at least partially incorporating information stored in the digital license plate; and

presenting parking related information on the display of the digital license plate.
