Abstract
A plethysmographic respiration processor is responsive to respiratory effects appearing on a blood volume waveform and the corresponding detected intensity waveform measured with an optical sensor at a blood perfused peripheral tissue site so as to provide a measurement of respiration rate. A preprocessor identifies a windowed pleth corresponding to a physiologically acceptable series of plethysmograph waveform pulses. Multiple processors derive different parameters responsive to particular respiratory effects on the windowed pleth. Decision logic determines a respiration rate based upon at least a portion of these parameters.

21. A patient monitor configured to determine a respiration rate from a plethysmograph waveform, the patient monitor comprising:

a preprocessor configured to receive a plethysmograph waveform from a noninvasive sensor monitoring a patient and identify a plurality of portions of the plethysmograph waveform which include physiologically acceptable series of plethysmograph waveform pulses; and one or more processors configured to; derive a first set of candidate respiration rates from a first respiratory-induced modulation in a portion of the plurality of portions, derive a second set of candidate respiration rates from a second respiratory-induced modulation in the portion, the second respiratory-induced modulation being different from the first respiratory-induced modulation, compare the first set of candidate respiration rates and the second set of candidate respiration rates to determine whether any of the first set of candidate respiration rates and any of the second set of candidate respiration rates are at a matching rate within a tolerance, and generate and output a respiration rate from determining that one of the first set of candidate respiration rates and one of the second set of candidate respiration rates are at the matching rate within the tolerance. - View Dependent Claims (22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36)

37. A method for determining a respiration rate from a plethysmograph waveform, the method comprising:

receiving a plethysmograph waveform from a noninvasive sensor monitoring a patient; identifying a plurality of portions of the plethysmograph waveform which include physiologically acceptable series of plethysmograph waveform pulses; deriving, by one or more processors, a first set of candidate respiration rates from a first respiratory-induced modulation in a portion of the plurality of portions; deriving, by the one or more processors, a second set of candidate respiration rates from a second respiratory-induced modulation in the portion, the second respiratory-induced modulation being different from the first respiratory-induced modulation; comparing, by the one or more processors, the first set of candidate respiration rates and the second set of candidate respiration rates to determine whether any of the first set of candidate respiration rates and any of the second set of candidate respiration rates are at a matching rate within a tolerance; and generating and outputting, by the one or more processors, a respiration rate from determining that one of the first set of candidate respiration rates and one of the second set of candidate respiration rates are at the matching rate within the tolerance. - View Dependent Claims (38, 39, 40)
