Abstract

A clear or translucent, stable, compact shampoo composition exhibiting good wet conditioning. The shampoo contains a cationic polymer and a surfactant system. The cationic polymer has an average molecular weight from about 50,000 g/mol to about 1,200,000 g/mol. The sulfate system contains an amino acid based surfactant and is substantially free of sulfate-based surfactants. The shampoo also has a relatively low viscosity.

Claims

1. A compact shampoo composition exhibiting good wet conditioning comprising:

a. from about 0.01% to about 2%, by weight, cationic polymer wherein the cationic polymer comprises an average molecular weight from about 50,000 g/mol to about 1,200,000 g/mol;

b. from about 15% to about 50%, by weight, surfactant system wherein the surfactant system comprises from about 5% to about 35%, by weight of the composition, amino acid based anionic surfactant;

wherein the composition is clear or translucent and stable after storage at ambient temperature;

wherein the shampoo composition is substantially free of sulfate-based surfactants.

2. The shampoo composition of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises from about 0.1% to about 1.2%, cationic polymer.

3. The shampoo composition of claim 1, wherein the average molecular weight of the cationic polymer is from about 225,000 g/mol to about 1,100,000 g/mol.

4. The shampoo composition of claim 1, wherein the cationic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyquaternium-6, polyquaternium-76, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, non-guar galactomannan polymer, and combinations thereof.

5. The shampoo composition of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises from about 22% to about 35%, by weight, surfactant system.

6. The shampoo composition of claim 1 further comprising from about from about 1% to about 15%, by weight, zwitterionic surfactant.

7. The shampoo composition of claim 6, wherein the zwitterionic surfactant is selected from the group consisting of cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), lauramidopropyl betaine (LAPB), coco betaine, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, lauryl hydroxysultaine and combinations thereof.

8. The shampoo composition of claim 6, wherein the surfactant system has a weight ratio of anionic surfactant to zwitterionic surfactant from about 3:

The shampoo composition of claim 1, wherein the shampoo composition comprises from about 10% to about 30%, by weight, amino acid based anionic surfactant wherein the amino acid based anionic surfactant is selected from the group consisting of acyl glutamates, acyl alanniates, acyl sarcosinates, acyl glycinates. and combinations thereof.

10. The shampoo composition of claim 9, wherein the amino acid anionic surfactant comprises an acyl glutamate and the composition can contain from about 2% to about 22%, by weight, acyl glutamate.

11. The shampoo composition of claim 9, wherein the acyl glutamate comprises disodium cocoyl glutamate.

12. The shampoo composition of claim 1, wherein the amino acid based anionic surfactant is selected from the group consisting of sodium cocoyl glutamate, disodium cocoyl glutamate, sodium cocoyl alaninate, sodium lauroyl glycinate sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, and combinations thereof.

13. The shampoo composition of claim 1, wherein the shampoo composition has a viscosity from about 1 cP to about 5000 cP.

14. The shampoo composition of claim 1, wherein the shampoo composition is substantially free of a viscosity reducing agent selected from the group consisting of propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, alcohols, glycerin, and combinations thereof.

15. The shampoo composition of claim 1, wherein the shampoo composition is substantially free of acrylate polymers and co-polymers and xanthan gum.

16. The shampoo composition of claim 1, wherein the shampoo composition further comprises a conditioning agent selected from the group consisting of silicone conditioning agents, organic conditioning materials, and combinations thereof.

The shampoo composition of claim 1, wherein the shampoo composition further comprises from about 3% to about 10%, by weight, propellant wherein the propellant is selected from the group consisting of propane, n-butane, isobutane, cyclopropane, and mixtures thereof, as well as halogenated hydrocarbons such as dichlorodifluoromethane, 1,1-dichloro-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane, 1-chloro-1,1-difluoro-2,2-trifluoroethane, 1-chloro-1,1-difluoroethylene, 1,1-difluoroethane, dimethyl ether, monochlorodifluoromethane, trans-1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene, and trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO 1234ze available by Honeywell), and combinations thereof.

18. The shampoo composition of claim 17 wherein the shampoo composition comprises a viscosity under pressure from about 1 to about 3000 cps.

19. A method of treating hair, the method comprising:

applying to the hair the shampoo composition according to claim 1, wherein the shampoo composition is dispensed from an aerosol foam dispenser or a pump foam dispenser as a dosage of foam.

The method of claim 19, wherein the shampoo composition is dispensed from an aerosol dispenser as a foam and wherein the shampoo composition further comprises from about 2% to about 10%, by weight of the composition, propellant wherein the propellant is selected from the group consisting of propane, n-butane, isobutane, cyclopropane, and mixtures thereof, as well as halogenated hydrocarbons such as dichlorodifluoromethane, 1,1-dichloro-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane, 1-chloro-1,1-difluoro-2,2-trifluoroethane, 1-chloro-1,1-difluoroethylene, 1,1-difluoroethane, dimethyl ether, monochlorodifluoromethane, trans-1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene, and trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO 1234ze available by Honeywell), and combinations thereof.
