Abstract

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, a system that facilitates receiving a plurality of ultra-wideband electromagnetic waves that propagates along a surface of a transmission medium without requiring an electrical return path, wherein the plurality of ultra-wideband electromagnetic waves conveys a plurality of communication signals, obtaining, from the plurality of ultra-wideband electromagnetic waves, at least one communication signal from the plurality of communication signals, and distributing the at least one communication signal to at least one communication device. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a first waveguide device, first electromagnetic waves that propagate along a physical transmission medium without requiring an electrical return path, wherein the physical transmission medium is supported by a supporting device that is located between the first waveguide device and a second waveguide device, wherein the first waveguide device and the second waveguide device are coupled to the physical transmission medium, wherein the first waveguide device and the second waveguide device are communicatively coupled via a communications medium, and wherein the first electromagnetic waves convey a first communication signal;

obtaining, by the first waveguide device, the first communication signal from the first electromagnetic waves; and

transmitting, by the first waveguide device, at least a portion of the first communication signal to the second waveguide device via the communications medium, wherein the communications medium differs from the physical transmission medium.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first communication signal operates in a first spectral segment, and wherein the first electromagnetic waves operate in a second spectral segment that differs from the first spectral segment.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first communication signal conforms to a signaling protocol, and wherein the first electromagnetic waves convey the first communication signal without modifying the signaling protocol.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first communication signal comprises a first modulated signal in a first spectral segment, and wherein the first electromagnetic waves convey the first modulated signal in a second spectral segment that differs from the first spectral segment.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the communications medium comprises a wireless communications medium, and wherein the transmitting the at least the portion of the first communication signal comprises converting, by the first waveguide device, the first electromagnetic waves to a wireless signal directed to the second waveguide device, and wherein the wireless signal conveys the at least the portion of the first communication signal.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising transmitting, by the first waveguide device, second electromagnetic waves that convey a second communication signal, wherein the second electromagnetic waves propagate along the physical transmission medium.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the second electromagnetic waves are directed to a third waveguide device, and wherein the transmitting comprises generating, by the first waveguide device, the second electromagnetic waves according to a second modulated signal in a third spectral segment.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the first electromagnetic waves and the second electromagnetic waves propagate along a same span of the physical transmission medium, and wherein the first waveguide device and the third waveguide device are configured to use a multiplexing technique to prevent a signal interference between the first electromagnetic waves and the second electromagnetic waves.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiving comprises receiving the first electromagnetic waves via a coupler of the first waveguide device.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising obtaining, by the first waveguide device, energy from the physical transmission medium to power the first waveguide device.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the communications medium comprises a cable, and wherein the transmitting the at least the portion of the first communication signal comprises converting, by the first waveguide device, the first electromagnetic waves to a signal directed to the second waveguide device via the cable, and wherein the signal conveys the at least the portion of the first communication signal.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the first waveguide device comprises at least one processor.

13. A first device, comprising:

a processing system including a processor; and

a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising;

receiving electromagnetic waves via a physical transmission medium, wherein the electromagnetic waves are generated according to a modulated signal in a first spectral segment without modifying a signaling protocol of the modulated signal, and wherein the electromagnetic waves operate in a second spectral segment that differs from the first spectral segment and wherein a first portion of the modulated signal is formatted to communicate with a wireless communication device in the first spectral segment, wherein the physical transmission medium is supported by a supporting device that is located between the first device and a second device, wherein the first device and the second device are coupled to the physical transmission medium, wherein the first device and the second device are communicatively coupled via a communications medium and wherein the electromagnetic waves propagate along the physical transmission medium without requiring an electrical return path; and

obtaining the modulated signal in the first spectral segment from the electromagnetic waves; and

transmitting a second portion of the modulated signal to the second device via the communications medium, wherein the communications medium differs from the physical transmission medium.

14. The first device of claim 13, wherein the physical transmission medium comprises a power line.

15. The first device of claim 14, wherein the supporting device comprises an insulator coupled to the power line.

16. The first device of claim 13, wherein the obtaining further comprises:

obtaining a reference signal from the electromagnetic waves;

mitigating a signal distortion in the electromagnetic waves according to the reference signal to generate updated electromagnetic waves; and

obtaining the modulated signal in the first spectral segment from the updated electromagnetic waves.

17. The first device of claim 16, wherein the reference signal comprises a preamble of the electromagnetic waves, and wherein the preamble enables the first device to obtain a synchronization signal therefrom.

18. The first device of claim 13, wherein a third device facilitates receiving the electromagnetic waves from a source system, and retransmitting the electromagnetic waves to the first device.

19. A first waveguide device, comprising:

a processing system including a processor; and

a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising;

receiving first electromagnetic waves that propagate along a physical transmission medium without requiring an electrical return path, wherein the first electromagnetic waves convey a plurality of communication signals, wherein the physical transmission medium is supported by a supporting device that is located between the first waveguide device and a second waveguide device, wherein the first waveguide device and the second waveguide device are communicatively coupled via a communications medium;

obtaining, from the first electromagnetic waves, at least one communication signal from the plurality of communication signals; and

transmitting the at least one communication signal to the second waveguide device via the communications medium, wherein the communications medium differs from the physical transmission medium.

20. The first waveguide device of claim 19, wherein the operations further comprise transmitting second electromagnetic waves that convey at least a remainder of the plurality of communication signals along the physical transmission medium.
