Abstract

Disclosed is a method of reducing the appearance of a fine line or wrinkle on skin. The method can include topically applying to the fine line or wrinkle a composition comprising an effective amount of 1,4-dioxacycloheptadecane-5,17-dione and methyl 3-oxo-2-pentylcyclopentanecarboxylate to reduce matrix metalloprotease (MMP)-9 activity in the skin, wherein topical application of the composition reduces MMP-9 activity in the skin and reduces the appearance of the fine line or wrinkle on the skin.

Claims

1. A method of reducing the appearance of a fine line or wrinkle on skin, the method comprising topically applying to the fine line or wrinkle a composition comprising:

an effective amount of 1,4-dioxacycloheptadecane-5,17-dione and methyl 3-oxo-2-pentylcyclopentanecarboxylate to reduce matrix metalloprotease (MMP)-9 activity in the skin,

wherein topical application of the composition reduces MMP-9 activity in the skin and reduces the appearance of the fine line or wrinkle on the skin.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the 1,4-dioxacycloheptadecane-5,17-dione also reduces skin inflammation by reducing cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 activity in the skin.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the composition further comprises 5-heptyldihydrofuran-2(3H)-one in an amount effective to reduce skin inflammation by reducing lipoxygenase (LO) activity in the skin.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the skin having the fine line or wrinkle is also inflamed skin.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is unscented.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is a cream or a lotion.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is an emulsion.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the emulsion is an oil-in-water emulsion.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is a gel.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises at least 1% by weight each of 1,4-dioxacycloheptadecane-5,17-dione and methyl 3-oxo-2-pentylcyclopentanecarboxylate.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises at least 1% by weight of a combination of 1,4-dioxacycloheptadecane-5,17-dione and methyl 3-oxo-2-pentylcyclopentanecarboxylate.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the 1,4-dioxacycloheptadecane-5,17-dione and the methyl 3-oxo-2-pentylcyclopentanecarboxylate are each encapsulated.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition does not include any additional fragrances.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is a sunscreen product or a mask product.
