Abstract

A medical device system is provided herein which has an elongated, flexible hollow member with an expandable infusion segment attached at the most distal end of the device. The device has a plurality of fluid infusion ports on the expandable infusion segment for delivering an intended fluid to a target site in a body lumen. Additionally, a method is provided herein for infusing an intended fluid to a target site within a body lumen.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

inserting a catheter into a hollow anatomical structure, the catheter comprising;

a plurality of expandable arms;

wherein each of the plurality of expandable arms comprise;

an infusion lumen; and

at least one infusion port;

advancing the catheter and the plurality of expandable arms towards a target site;

expanding the plurality of expandable arms to a first diameter; and

delivering a first amount of fluid through the infusion lumen and the infusion port of each of the plurality of expandable arms;

wherein the fluid is configured to be delivered towards an undesirable material at the target site.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the catheter comprises a single catheter lumen in fluid communication with the infusion lumen of each of the plurality of expandable arms.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the one infusion ports are configured to be skived.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

manipulating the plurality of expandable arms;

wherein the plurality of expandable arms are configured to mechanically disrupt the undesirable material.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of expandable arms are configured to form a twist-shaped expandable infusion segment.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

adjusting the plurality of expandable arms to a second diameter, wherein the second diameter is different than the first diameter.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

delivering a second amount of fluid through the at least one infusion port.

8. A method comprising:

inserting a catheter into a hollow anatomical structure, the catheter comprising;

a plurality of expandable arms comprised of a shape memory metal;

wherein each of the plurality of expandable arms further comprise;

a dedicated infusion lumen; and

at least one infusion port;

wherein the at least one infusion port is configured to be on an outer surface of the plurality of expandable arms;

placing the catheter and the plurality of expandable arms at a first position of a target site;

expanding the plurality of expandable arms to a first diameter;

delivering a first amount of fluid through the infusion port of each of the plurality of expandable arms;

wherein the fluid is configured to be delivered towards an undesirable material at the target site; and

placing the catheter and the plurality of expandable arms at a second position of the target site.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the fluid is configured to soften the undesirable material for removal from the hollow anatomical structure.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the fluid is a thrombolytic.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of:

aspirating the undesirable material from the hollow anatomical structure.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the shape memory metal is nitinol.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising the step of:

rotating the plurality of expandable arms around a longitudinal axis of the catheter to mechanically disrupt the undesirable material.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of:

directing the fluid exiting the at least one infusion port in a direction substantially perpendicular from the longitudinal axis of the catheter.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the catheter comprises a single catheter lumen in fluid communication with the infusion lumen of each of the plurality of expandable arms.

16. A method comprising:

inserting a catheter into a vessel, the catheter comprising;

a plurality of expandable arms;

wherein each of the plurality of expandable arms comprise;

an infusion lumen; and

at least one infusion port;

advancing the catheter and the plurality of expandable arms towards a thrombus material;

expanding the plurality of expandable arms to a first diameter inside the thrombus material; and

delivering a first amount of fluid through the infusion lumen and the infusion port of each of the plurality of expandable arms;

wherein the fluid is configured to be delivered into the thrombus material.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the at least one infusion port is a skive-shaped port along an outer surface of one of the plurality of expandable arms.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising the step of:

simultaneously manipulating the plurality of expandable arms while delivering fluid to the thrombus material.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the plurality of expandable arms form a helical shaped expandable infusion segment.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the catheter comprises a single catheter lumen in fluid communication with the infusion lumen of each of the plurality of expandable arms.
