Abstract

This disclosure relates to a banknote validator. The banknote validator comprises a banknote path disposed within an interior of the banknote validator, the banknote path including a banknote imaging zone, one or more banknote edge detection surfaces each configured to provide images of edges of a banknote in the banknote path, a banknote imaging sensor configured to provide an image of at least one portion of the banknote imaging zone, and an image sensor configured to capture the images of the edges of the banknote provided by the one or more banknote edge detection surfaces, and capture the image of the at least one portion of the banknote imaging zone provided by the banknote imaging sensor.

Claims

1. A banknote validator, comprising:

a banknote path disposed within an interior of the banknote validator, the banknote path including a banknote imaging zone;

one or more banknote edge detection surfaces each configured to provide images of edges of a banknote in the banknote path;

a banknote imaging sensor configured to provide an image of at least one portion of the banknote imaging zone; and

an image sensor configured to

capture the images of the edges of the banknote provided by the one or more banknote edge detection surfaces, and

capture the image of the at least one portion of the banknote imaging zone provided by the banknote imaging sensor.

2. The banknote validator of claim 1, further comprising:

a processor configured to;

measure a skew or offset of the banknote from the images of the edges of the banknote; and

control a steerable drive wheel disposed in the banknote path to move in a direction to reorient the banknote in the banknote path.

3. The banknote validator of claim 2, further comprising:

a steering plate coupled to the steerable drive wheel;

a steering arm coupled to a bottom of the steering plate; and

a helical cam coupled to the steering arm and operable to rotate on a motor shaft coupled to a steering motor,

wherein a rotation of the helical cam causes the steering arm and the steerable drive wheel to move from a central position to an angled position to reorient the banknote in the banknote path based on the skew or offset.

4. The banknote validator of claim 2, further comprising:

a steering plate coupled to the steerable drive wheel;

a steering arm coupled to a bottom of the steering plate;

an electromagnetic actuator disposed adjacent the steering arm; and

an arm coupled to the electromagnetic actuator and coupled to the steering arm, the arm operable to, upon activation of the electromagnetic actuator, rotate the steering arm,

wherein a rotation of the steering arm causes the steering arm and the steerable drive wheel to move from a central position to an angled position to reorient the banknote in the banknote path based on the skew or offset.

5. The banknote validator of claim 2, further comprising:

a steering plate coupled to the steerable drive wheel;

a steering arm coupled to a bottom of the steering plate, wherein the steering arm includes a plurality of teeth operable to mesh with a drive gear; and

a stepper motor coupled to the drive gear and operable to rotate the drive gear,

wherein a rotation of the drive gear causes the steering arm and the steerable drive wheel to move from a central position to an angled position to reorient the banknote in the banknote path in response to a skew or offset detection.

6. The banknote validator of claim 2, wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive the captured image of the at least one portion of the banknote imaging zone, wherein the captured image of the at least one portion of the banknote imaging zone includes at least a portion of a banknote;

perform image stitching on the captured image including the at least one portion of the banknote with other captured images of the banknote; and

create a full image of the banknote as a result of the image stitching.

7. The banknote validator of claim 6, wherein the processor is further configured to:

perform image processing on the captured image of the at least one portion of the banknote imaging zone, or on the full image of the banknote, wherein the image processing includes at least one of contrast stretching, flat field calibration, and dark frame calibration.

8. The banknote validator of claim 7, wherein the processor is further configured to:

perform a text recognition process on the full image of the banknote; and

read a serial number from the full image of the banknote.

9. The banknote validator of claim 1, wherein the banknote imaging zone includes:

a reflective strip in a first portion of the banknote imaging zone, and

a dark region in a second portion of the banknote imaging zone,

wherein the reflective strip and the dark region of the banknote imaging zone provide a background for images used for detection of foreign objects in the banknote imaging zone.

The banknote validator of claim 9, wherein the image sensor is further configured to capture an image of at least one portion of a foreign object in the banknote imaging zone reflected in the banknote imaging sensor, and wherein a processor is configured to determine that a foreign object is present in the banknote imaging zone.

11. A method of a banknote validator, comprising:

capturing by an image sensor one or more images of edges of a banknote in a banknote path, the one or more images provided by one or more edge detection surfaces, wherein the banknote path is disposed within an interior of a banknote validator, and wherein the banknote path includes a banknote imaging zone; and

capturing by the image sensor an image of at least one portion of the banknote imaging zone, the image provided by a banknote imaging sensor.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

measuring by a processor a skew or offset of the banknote from the images of the edges of the banknote; and

controlling by the processor a steerable drive wheel disposed in the banknote path to move in a direction to reorient the banknote in the banknote path.

The method of claim 12, wherein a steering plate is coupled to the steerable drive wheel, a steering arm is coupled to a bottom of the steering plate, and a helical cam is coupled to the steering arm and operable to rotate on a motor shaft coupled to a steering motor, and wherein the steerable drive wheel is controlled by rotating the helical cam, causing the steering arm and the steerable drive wheel to move from a central position to an angled position to reorient the banknote in the banknote path based on the skew or offset.

The method of claim 12, wherein a steering plate is coupled to the steerable drive wheel, a steering arm is coupled to a bottom of the steering plate, an electromagnetic actuator is disposed adjacent the steering arm, and an arm is coupled to the electromagnetic actuator and to the steering arm, and wherein the steerable drive wheel is controlled by activating the electromagnetic actuator to rotate the steering arm, causing the steering arm and the steerable drive wheel to move from a central position to an angled position to reorient the banknote in the banknote path based on the skew or offset.

The method of claim 12, wherein a steering plate is coupled to the steerable drive wheel, a steering arm is coupled to a bottom of the steering plate, the steering arm including a plurality of teeth operable to mesh with a drive gear, and a stepper motor coupled to the drive gear and operable to rotate the drive gear, and wherein the steerable drive wheel is controlled by rotating the drive gear, causing the steering arm and the steerable drive wheel to move from a central position to an angled position to reorient the banknote in the banknote path in response to a skew or offset detection.

16. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

receiving by the processor the captured image of the at least one portion of the banknote imaging zone, wherein the captured image of the at least one portion of the banknote imaging zone includes at least a portion of a banknote;

performing, by the processor, image stitching on the captured image including the at least one portion of the banknote with other captured images of the banknote; and

creating by the processor a full image of the banknote as a result of the image stitching.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

performing, by the processor, image processing on the captured image of the at least one portion of the banknote imaging zone, or on the full image of the banknote, wherein the image processing includes at least one of contrast stretching, flat field calibration, and dark frame calibration.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

performing by the processor a text recognition process on the full image of the banknote; and

reading by the processor a serial number from the full image of the banknote.

19. The method of claim 11, wherein the banknote imaging zone includes a reflective strip in a first portion of the banknote imaging zone and a dark region in a second portion of the banknote imaging zone, and the method further comprising:

providing by the reflective strip and the dark region of the banknote imaging zone a background for images used for detection of foreign objects in the banknote imaging zone.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

capturing by the image sensor an image of at least one portion of a foreign object in the banknote imaging zone reflected in the banknote imaging sensor; and

determining by a processor that a foreign object is present in the banknote imaging zone.
