Abstract

Various components of an electronic device housing and methods for their assembly are disclosed. The housing can be formed by assembling and connecting two or more different sections together. The sections of the housing may be coupled together using one or more coupling members. The coupling members may be formed using a two-shot molding process in which the first shot forms a structural portion of the coupling members, and the second shot forms cosmetic portions of the coupling members.

Claims

1. A portable electronic device, comprising:

a housing that includes side walls, wherein the side walls define (i) a front opening, and (ii) a radio frequency (RF) antenna window that is opposite of the front opening; and

an antenna panel including RF-transmissive material that is carried within the RF antenna window by the side walls.

2. The portable electronic device of claim 1, further comprising:

a cover glass carried within the front opening by the side walls.

3. The portable electronic device of claim 1, wherein the housing further includes a back wall that together with the side walls define a cavity, and the portable electronic device further comprises an RF antenna that is carried within the cavity.

4. The portable electronic device of claim 3, wherein the back wall includes a radio-opaque material.

5. The portable electronic device of claim 1, wherein the side walls include (i) a front edge that defines the front opening, and (ii) a back edge that defines the RF antenna window.

6. The portable electronic device of claim 5, wherein the front edge is characterized as having a first curvature, and the back edge is characterized as having a second curvature.

7. The portable electronic device of claim 1, wherein an exterior surface of the antenna panel is flush with an exterior surface of the side walls.

8. A portable electronic device, comprising:

a housing including side walls that define a cavity, wherein the side walls include (i) a front edge that defines a front opening, and (ii) a rear edge that defines a rear opening;

an RF circuit that is carried within the cavity, wherein the RF circuit is capable of coupling with an RF antenna to establish a wireless communication channel; and

an antenna panel that includes RF-transmissive material, wherein the antenna panel is carried within the rear opening by the rear edge.

9. The portable electronic device of claim 8, further comprising:

a cover glass that is carried within the front opening by the front edge.

10. The portable electronic device of claim 9, wherein the front edge is characterized as having a first curvature, and the rear edge is characterized as having a second curvature.

11. The portable electronic device of claim 10, wherein the antenna panel is separated from the cover glass by a gap, and the gap includes a coupling member having an exterior surface that is flush with exterior surfaces of the side walls.

12. The portable electronic device of claim 11, wherein an exterior surface of the antenna panel is flush with exterior surfaces of the side walls.

13. The portable electronic device of claim 12, wherein the coupling member includes a dielectric material.

14. The portable electronic device of claim 8, wherein the RF-transmissive material is glass material.

15. A portable electronic device, comprising:

a housing including a bottom wall and side walls that together define a cavity, wherein at least one of the side walls includes (i) a front edge that defines a front opening, and (ii) a rear edge that defines a rear opening;

an antenna panel including RF-transmissive material that is carried by the rear edge so as to cover the rear opening; and

an RF circuit carried within the cavity and capable of establishing a wireless communication channel with an RF antenna.

16. The portable electronic device of claim 15, wherein the front opening is opposite of the rear opening.

17. The portable electronic device of claim 16, wherein an exterior surface of the antenna panel is flush with external surfaces of the bottom wall and the side walls.

18. The portable electronic device of claim 17, wherein the antenna panel is separated from the at least one side wall by a gap, and the gap is filled with a dielectric material.

19. The portable electronic device of claim 18, wherein the at least one side wall includes a radio-opaque material.

20. The portable electronic device of claim 15, further comprising:

an RF-transparent cover that is carried by the front edge and covers the front opening.
