Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for predicting the degree of weight loss attainable by applying one or more dietary interventions to a subject and/or the degree of maintenance of weight loss following one or more dietary interventions; which method comprises determining the level of microRNA-486 (miR-486) in one or more samples obtained from the subject; and/or determining the nucleotide of the subject at one or more polymorphic positions genetically linked to miR-486.

Claims

1. A method for predicting the degree of weight loss attainable by applying one or more dietary interventions to a subject and/or the degree of maintenance of weight loss following one or more dietary interventions comprising:

determining the level of microRNA-486 (miR-486) in one or more samples obtained from the subject; and

/or determining the nucleotide of the subject at one or more polymorphic positions genetically linked to miR-486.

3. A method according to claim 1, wherein the one or more polymorphic positions genetically linked to miR-486 is a polymorphic position shown in Table 1 or Table 2.

4. A method according to claim 1, wherein the one or more polymorphic positions are selected from:

(i) position 26 of SEQ ID NO;

3 (rs545936)

(ii) position 26 of SEQ ID NO;

4 (rs6981587); and

(iii) position 26 of SEQ ID NO;

5 (rs190249167).

5. A method according to claim 1 wherein the method comprises determining a presence selected from the group consisting of G at position 26 of SEQ ID NO:

3;

C at position 26 of SEQ ID NO;

4; and

C at position 26 of SEQ ID NO;

10. A method according to claim 1 wherein the one or more samples are derived from a location selected from the group consisting of blood, saliva, urine, muscle and adipose tissue.

11. A method according to claim 1, wherein the dietary intervention is a low calorie diet.

A method according to claim 1, wherein the method further comprises combining the level of miRNA-486 and/or determining the nucleotide of the subject at one or more polymorphic positions genetically linked to miR-486 with one or more anthropometric measures and/or lifestyle characteristics of the subject.

A method for predicting the degree of improvement in glycemic control attainable by applying one or more dietary interventions to a subject comprising determining the level of microRNA-486 (miR-486) in one or more samples obtained from the subject and/or determining the nucleotide of the subject at one or more polymorphic positions genetically linked to miR-486.

28. A method according to claim 2, wherein the one or more polymorphic positions genetically linked to miR-486 is a polymorphic position shown in Table 1 or Table 2.

29. A method according to claim 2, wherein the one or more polymorphic positions are selected from:

(i) position 26 of SEQ ID NO;

3 (rs545936)

(ii) position 26 of SEQ ID NO;

4 (rs6981587); and

(iii) position 26 of SEQ ID NO;

5 (rs190249167).

30. A method according to claim 2 wherein the method comprises determining a presence selected from the group consisting of G at position 26 of SEQ ID NO:

C at position 26 of SEQ ID NO;

4; and

C at position 26 of SEQ ID NO;

31. A method according to claim 2 wherein the one or more samples are derived from a location selected from the group consisting of blood, saliva, urine, muscle and adipose tissue.

32. A method according to claim 2, wherein the dietary intervention is a low calorie diet.

23. An allele-specific oligonucleotide probe or primer capable of detecting a polymorphic position shown in Table 1 or Table 2.

25. An allele-specific oligonucleotide probe according to claim 23 which is capable of detecting a polymorphic position selected from:
