Abstract

This invention relates to methods of treating and ameliorating congenital and neonatal hyperinsulinism and post-prandial hypoglycemia, comprising the step of administering an antagonist of the Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor, e.g. a GLP-1 fragment or analogue thereof.

A method of treating neonatal hyperinsulinism or reducing an incidence of hypoglycemia in a subject having neonatal hyperinsulinism comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of a peptide wherein the amino acid sequence of the peptide consists of the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the neonatal hyperinsulinism is a non-genetic, prolonged hyperinsulinism.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein the neonatal hyperinsulinism is a result of peri-natal stress.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the peri-natal stress is a result of small-for-gestational-age birth weight.

24. The method of claim 22, wherein the peri-natal stress is a result of birth asphyxia.

25. The method of claim 20, wherein the peptide is administered intravenously, parenterally, orally, intraperitoneally, subcutaneously, or by a combination thereof.

26. The method of claim 20, wherein the peptide is administered subcutaneously.

27. The method of claim 20, wherein the peptide is administered intravenously.

28. The method of claim 20, wherein the peptide is administered by infusion.
