Abstract

Output devices or systems, such as televisions, speakers, projectors, or output controllers, are herein disclosed and enabled for wirelessly receiving digital content from a digital content service or from an information apparatus. The disclosed output device includes wireless communication circuitry and an interface. To set up the output device for receiving and playing the digital content, the output device first receives, via the interface, security information, and then establishes a wireless local area network connection. Subsequent to having established the wireless local area network connection, the output device connects to a server over a network, using the wireless communication circuitry, for downloading and installing software applications or software components for upgrading or modifying the capabilities of the output device. Thereafter, the output device is setup for receiving the digital content from the information apparatus and from the service using the downloaded and installed software components.

Claims

1. A wireless output device for connecting to a wireless local area network and for receiving digital content from one or more servers over a network that includes the Internet, the wireless output device is for outputting video digital content or audio digital content, and the wireless output device is at least one of a television, an external output controller wire connectable to a television, a display device, a projector, an audio output device, or a speaker, individually or in any combination, the wireless output device includes:

an interface for interacting with a user;

operating system software to facilitate download and installation of application software or software components at the wireless output device;

one or more processors, for executing at least part of the operating system software; and

one or more wireless communication units that include wireless communication circuitry for wireless communication, and the wireless output device is operable for;

(i) wirelessly broadcasting or wirelessly announcing, by the wireless output device and using the one or more wireless communication units, availability of the wireless output device for an information apparatus to wirelessly discover, by short range wireless communication, the wireless output device for service, the information apparatus being a distinct device from the wireless output device;

(ii) connecting the wireless output device, using at least one wireless communication unit of the one or more wireless communication units, to the wireless local area network subsequent to the wireless output device having been wirelessly discovered by the information apparatus in (i);

(iii) downloading, using the at least one wireless communication unit of the one of more wireless communication units and via the wireless local area network in (ii), application software or software components from one or more servers or host computers over the network, the application software or software components for upgrading, updating, adding, or modifying features and capabilities of the wireless output device;

(iv) installing, at the wireless output device, the application software or software components downloaded in (iii), the installing of the application software or software components being facilitated, at least in part, by the operating system software included in the wireless output device;

(v) wirelessly establishing, using the one or more wireless communication units and over the wireless local area network connected in (ii), a wireless communication link with the information apparatus that has wirelessly discovered the wireless output device in (i);

(vi) wirelessly receiving, using at least one wireless communication unit of the one of more wireless communication units, digital content from the information apparatus that has wirelessly discovered the wireless output device in (i), the received digital content includes audio digital content or video digital content, individually or in any combination; and

(vii) processing, at the wireless output device, at least part of the digital content wirelessly received in (vi) for outputting or playing at the wireless output device, the processing includes at least one of a color operation, an image processing operation, a scaling operation, a resolution operation, an interpolation operation, a decoding operation, or an encoding operation, individually or in any combination, on the at least part of the digital content wirelessly received in (vi).

2. The wireless output device according to claim 1, wherein the one or more wireless communication units, which are included in the wireless output device, is compatible, at least partly, with at least part of a protocol within IEEE 802.11 standards for wireless local area network communication;

and wherein the wireless communication link wirelessly established in (v) is compatible, at least partly, with at least part of a protocol within IEEE 802.11 standards or Bluetooth specifications.

3. The wireless output device according to claim 1, wherein the wireless output device is a television or an external output controller wire connectable to a television;

and wherein the wireless output device is further operable for establishing a wired connection to a local area network for accessing the network via Ethernet.

The wireless output device according to claim 1, wherein the wireless output device is an external output controller connectable to a television via a wired connection, and wherein the wireless output device is further operable for sending at least part of the processed digital content in (vii), via the wired connection, to the television for outputting or rendering at least part of the processed digital content at the television.

5. The wireless output device according to claim 2 , wherein, subsequent to being wirelessly discovered by the information apparatus in (i), the wireless output device is further operable for:

detecting identification information or authentication information, the identification information or authentication information includes one or more of a user name, a password, an ID number, signatures, signature keys, biometrics, fingerprints, or voice, individually or in any combination, the detecting of the identification information or authentication information is to enable the information apparatus to access services provided by the wireless output device; and

wherein the wireless discovery of the wireless output device by the information apparatus is via the short range wireless communication.

The wireless output device according to claim 1, wherein the interface included in the wireless output device is a wireless interface for communicating with a smart phone, and the wireless output device is further operable for wirelessly receiving authentication information or security information from the smart phone via the wireless interface;

and wherein the authentication information or security information wirelessly received from the smart phone includes one or more of a user name, a password, an ID number, signatures, signature keys, biometrics, fingerprints, or voice, individually or in any combination.

7. The wireless output device according to claim 1, wherein the wireless output device is further operable for:

wirelessly transmitting, by the wireless output device to the information apparatus and via the short range wireless communication or the wireless communication link, at least an attribute related to the wireless output device for the information apparatus to select the wireless output device for the service; and

wirelessly receiving, via the short range wireless communication or the wireless communication link, digital content from the information apparatus that has selected the attribute related to the wireless output device for the service.
